Just saw that Jon Olson of the St Louis County Rescue Squad had cut a large hole for the Polar Plunge at BayView this weekend. He reports a total of 31" of ice. Of that there is only 11 in of clear ice, the rest is slush ice. So if anyone is worried about a late ice out, don't be. The slush ice will deteriorate very quickly.

Too bad the 1-2 feet of snow on the lake has to melt before the ice can begin to deteriorate.

That along with the fact that March, and occasionally April, have heavy snowfalls.

I expect another late ice out unless we get some real warm weather, but may not happen.

Just curious, where do you get the idea that the white ice will melt faster than clear ice?

There are more air and gas bubbles trapped in the white ice than clear ice. With less actual ice to melt, it melts faster than the clear ice. That's how I've always understood it at least. However, I'm not sure if that's scientifically accurate.

The white ice will also absorb the sun's heat much better then the clear ice will.

Well no matter what color the ice is right now we are a long way from open water at this point. It is supposed to warm up as we move into the weekend and into next week, however the night time lows are still way below average and until they warm up ain't nobody going to see any open water.

"Is the ice gone yet?" No Ace, go back to sleep.....

I have open water in front of my place! Of course, that area is open most of the winter too!

Three questions:

Has anyone tried to plow a road out by Birch lately?

Is there slush out in big bay from McKinley?

Has the DNR extended the "house off" date for perms beyond the 17th date?

You can see where I am coming from....

I drove down to McKinley yesterday. There was a short road headed towards Pike Bay narrows. Nothing going towards Birch.

Looks like very tough going out in that direction from the landing!

Lots of snow drifts and probably slush in spots under them!

  • 2 weeks later...

Randy,

Ya much of Iron Range could be hit with 10"-15" of snow!...Models should have much better handle by Sunday eve when there will be better sampling...I wont mention what our thinking is for spring/summer just yet, might be a bit upsetting!

Randy,

could be but we still have time before we pull trigger on such a forecast for the up coming warm season...Right now 09/2010 looks as if might be a good analog...That said the best fishing I ever had was in the summer of 09 on lake Vermilion with my buddy cliff!!

There are many frozen water lines and sewer systems up here. Both my water line and sewer is frozen. For people that haven't been up for the last few weeks, they may be in for an unpleasant surprise. The frost line is down to 9 feet in places. It was -19 last night. More below zero readings in the forecast! Ugh

I have not heard of many other than in the towns. My sewer froze just outside the house in January. We were gone for a few days so jetted it out and put in a condensate pump for the furnace and have not had a problem since. Was pushing some snow back the other day and where the snow has been untouched all winter, there is no frost or minimal frost.

Here is a neat little web site showing frost depths on road beds.

much of the Range and the Vermilion area might be catching a break with this storm, snow bands setting up further south then expected as storm gets going...Short term models show only 1"-3" for much of the Iron Range...Models have not been worth spit most of the winter!

Hey thanks Shamrock, This gave me some optimism that the frost will go out of the ground yet in April based on the history graph for Orr. The frost is now at 97 inches. the previous lowest depth was 75 inches! That 2 foot difference is what froze my pipes.

Glad we are missing the heaviest part of the snow band. Hopefully we will get that March thaw yet.

I feel your pain Niles. The water line from my well froze and burst about a month ago. We had to shut the pump off quite a while ago. First time in twenty five years there has been a problem. We've been hauling water up from the lake in 5 gallon buckets to flush and bringing in drinking water by the gallon to consume. The contractors tell me no fix till late May. Sucks! BrianF

It's times like this (rare) that I'm glad we don't have indoor plumbing...sucks in the middle of the night though!

Actually, I enjoy waking up at 3 or 4am, getting the fire roaring again, and then going off the deck. Clear nights are especially beautiful and especially when it's very cold. It makes me appreciate the five step walk back into the warm cabin.

On the South Shore...  It's deer hunting season in MN and not many are out fishing.  Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.   The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     No surprise, vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is the program for most anglers.  Anglers are going through a lot of frozen emerald shiners as the walleyes and saugers are all mixed sizes.  You will catch small ones and your eaters.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well.    Anglers are also reporting very good numbers of jumbo perch this fall.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      Good numbers of fish are staged in great spots for the upcoming ice fishing season. On the Rainy River...  Good numbers of shiners again in the river this past week. Typically, if there are shiners, there will be walleyes, and there definitely are.     Walleyes are coming from various spots from Four Mile Bay to Wheeler's Point, to Baudette all the way to Birchdale.  With so many anglers taking advantage of the deer hunting season, there are not a lot of boats on the river.      Walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.  The bait and consequently, walleyes, are moving around.  Once you find some fish, you will be rewarded. Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the way to go. Some anglers are also still trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  For those not in the woods hunting, fall fishing continues to be excellent.  It is areas with structure holding walleyes in this part of the lake.  Points, neck-down areas with current, shoreline breaks, and transition zones from rock to mud are all productive locations for walleye right now.     A nice mixed bag with perch, pike and crappies being caught as well. Good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

Yes.  No lightning strikes in the area on Saturday and a tree was burning.  The squirrel hunters have been a nuisance this year with more activity in our area then we have ever seen.  This was the 3rd fire in the section of woods in the past 2 weeks.  Most definitely not caused by natural events.

Stop, trying to make everybody feel bad that not in the woods!   😟  😆

Haha!  No… In other news: All the cell cams users that I talk with are seeing some daylight movement of adult bucks since yesterday.  No deer hunters want to be at work right now.

The water temps on the west end Friday were 45 in HeadOLakes and 44 in the smaller bays.

You didn't Sluice um! 😆 I was driving 94 passed Runnings in Monticello yesterday late after noon and saw a huge, thick dark brown 8 point running alone the freeway with its tongue out.  Thinking he was after a girlfriend! 😜
