Nanne was on kfan yesterday and he really thinks that was it for NHL players. Don't blame them really. 20 days off in middle of season and then injuries for those participating?

He thought the world cup would make a comeback.

Hey Bear, who were these 2 greatest teams and what one was "slightly" not as good as the other? I certainly hope you werent referring to team USA cause they got outplayed in every aspect of the game, and that is happening today as well. Play has been very FLAT and unorganized. These other teams play very crisp hockey, we do not. How many times have you counted 4 deep in the oppositions zone? Many for me, all bunched up too. We looked like complete arse, makes you wonder how we got to the bronze game. One word: ugly.

Teemu is one of a kind, I've always liked his style, always puts up points. Top 10 all time. Great career.

Highest scoring team in the Olympic's and the last 2 games, we forgot to score.

I understand losing to a world power in Canada but even though Finland is good, how in the world did they beat the USA, it's called heart and the never die, after Finland scored 2, we gave up.

Really a very sad day for hockey in the USA when we cannot even get the Bronze, very sad.

Was having coffee with bud's this am and one said how could you say that both USA teams would lose in thier games against Cananda, I said heart, you have to play with your heart. Thats how the women to the north of us do it all the time, they want it more.

I also told them that Finland would beat the USA. Finland showed today why they deserved the Bronze.

The best team in the world can lose if the other wants it more. We beat many of these teams in the first rounds with many goals but when it came down to the medal round, other than 1 game, we stunk it up.

The US came up short. Feel bad that US couldn't get a medal, but that is part of sports amd competetion. Do you think the other countries don't have skilled and highly talented players? Canada barely got by their quaterfinal game, but they put 55 shots on net. Even if they would have lost, I would say they played an excellent game. We aren't talking about robots, these guys did the best they could and came up short.

On the Other forum a guy indicated the USA missed Pominville?.....I don't post over there because I do not use Marcum, TUC and Custom Jig and spins.

My response to that thread is, ARE YOU KDDING ME? This team lacked balls and size. The missing ingredients were Bobby Ryan and Kyle Okoposo. In the net and defensively we were as solid any team playing they were worn down by the end of the tourney. Pat Kane sucked. He was worthless. TJ Oshie starred in the shoot out but was invisible during the games. The Canadians pushed our undersized players to the outside at will.

The last thing we needed was another highly skilled undersized finesse player. That is why the Wild will likely not advance very far. They are going to get pushed around just like USA did.

I don't think anyone can say USA wasn't one of the best teams in the tournament, still stand by that. The last two olympics we gave Canada everything they could handle and then some. No doubt beating them and taking them to OT in 2010 will rank higher than this year but I guess you can say sometimes teams are better when trying to prove themselves vs knowing they are good.

Total pathetic effort today, we didn't deserve a medal and Finland whooped are azz today. Happy for them and to see Selanne go out with a win/medal. Also very excited about what Granlund did in this tournament, kid is only scratching the surface and we are lucky to have him.

Men: It is all star hockey at its best. It is just held one out of four years. The US did not medal. Somewhat of a failure for the time and money put into USA hockey.

Women: They FAILED. The bad call in OT should never have happened, but USA gave up the lead and eventually the Gold Medal and the USA team let it happen.

There is only one game that matters in women's Olympic hockey and that was USA:Canada Gold Medal game. The IOC has publicly stated that Womens Hockey could be on the way out if competitive play does not improve. You cannot have two teams in an Olympic sport. It happened to Women's softball.

If its left up to the greedy owners yes that would be it.... fortunately the players are are 100 percent in favor of continuing to play in the Olympics so maybe it will still happen.

The only team to win a medal in each of the last three Olympics? Finland.

Finland is also the only country to win medals (though admittedly no gold) in five of the last six Olympics. No one else can say that. Not Russia. Not Sweden. Not Canada.

Don't dismiss them as a pushover. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, the three world powers in hockey are Canada, Sweden and Finland. The US, Russia, and Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic are the second tier.

Though I understand your point, can you blame the "greedy" owners for wanting to protect their investment? Tavarres is out for the season because of an injury caused during the olympics. The NHL shuts down for nearly 3 weeks in the middle of their season and for what gain? They get zero out of this deal and only are left to deal with the negatives (injuries).

No other sport shuts down to let their players participate in the Olympics. NBA players are in the offseason.

Do I enjoy seeing the best players in the world compete every 4 years for their respective countries? Absolutely, but I just dont see how this is going to happen considering the overall impacts to the NHL.

Surprised the players don't have the Olympics participation as part of their NHLPA - CBA. I understand the 20 day layoff makes for a jerky season for the fans but the owners argument about the injury is weak IMO; if they were not playing in the Olympics they'd be playing in the NHL with the same probability of being injured. Unless they argue more probability of injury with more games but come on...the player could tweak his knee going down the steps to the locker room...or playing Frisbee in the parking lot; and the exposure the sport and players get from the Olympics should offset......

I agree and not to mention the three-week rest also heels injuries which prevents recurring injury potential and prevents others from happening for 95 percent of the league.

To me the issue is more prone to injury with the highest priced assets. It isnt like they have the potential to lose Clayton Stoner its Parise and Suter.

I dont buy for one second that the NHL has a sudden boost in popularity because of the Olympics. The majority of fans interested in watching the Olympics in large part just care about their country vs the discipline itself. I am talking about folks who are not normally a fan of said discipline.

Altho i enjoyed watching olympic hockey, Its a huge buzz kill on the nhl season. we will probably see some ugly hockey for a week or so now, kinda like an extented training camp. dont like the nfl games in europe, and i see mlb is opening in australia this yr to. way to many "specialty" games going on in sports now a days. but money drives everything.

The NHL thinks that the "star power" is what will get them back in the top 4 sports and on sportscenter more and sell more tickets, merch, etc. so they don't want to give up their stars. The owners have to buy insurance on their players and I'm sure that's not cheap.. Olympics should be amateurs anyway IMO, not a bunch of stars making. $6-$8m a year.

I for one like ugly hockey on smaller rinks and am looking forward to tomorrow. I had a hard time catching the games due to the time change anyway, the only 2 games a watched was the US/Rus and US/Can games.

I get the GREEDY owners concerns LOL.... grin

On a side note NHL Center Ice package is FREE for the next week. On Direct TV for sure but I would assume all carriers are giving it...

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
