There is a snow covered ice shelf going out from shore at the French and much of the surrounding area preventing shore fishing. Wind and wave action will be needed to take it away.

Sitting out from Brighton Beach right now. I used a tape and there are 15 1/2" of ice, two of which is refrozen melt and the rest is good solid stuff. Fishing is slow but there is plenty of ice. As always use caution, especially near shore (a gap of 12") but you can still take advantage of this unique oppurtunity for the time being. Good luck.

A couple of ice fishermen had to be summoned off the Brighton Beach area today by the Duluth Fire Department when the main sheet of ice moved with the strong east wind opening a gap at the near shore pressure ridge. The snowman is alone out there now.

Satellite images still look pretty good from today. Is there any walkable ice at 21st for 100 or 200 yards?

I just saw someone walking on the ice out from Fitgers. They were way out by the open water. It didn't even look like they were fisherman, just someone out for a stroll. Yikes, I hope we don't see them on the news tonight. I would definitely not be out there anymore. My guess is they have no idea what danger they are in being out there.

Yeah, it's opening up and deteriorating rapidly. Even the stuff that's not moving around is looking pretty soft to me.

I saw them, too. It appeared that some law enforcement escorted them off

I'm sure there will be a warning on the news about venturing on the ice out there.It's time to start thinking open water and I'm chomping at the bit to get out there and use my new boat I bought last fall
