The Alder was out in the bay cutting this afternoon ,,,it wasnt making good progress as I seen it back up twice to get some steam up to cut the thick ice it may be a few days before it makes it out of the harbor

I drove by 21st today. Still people fishing out there. Looked like the cutter had gone through and people were not out that far. The cutter works closer in as it heads toward the lift bridge so if you want to get further out you can probably head further up the shore. I didn't look any further than 21st though. I'm guessing the ice will be ok...obviously just don't get to close to where the cutter trail is.

Thanks for the update Biff, very much appreciated. Hopefully the ice sticks around.

Yes thank you for the updates. I am hoping for one more report Friday afternoon/evening. A few friends and I are planning on heading up. We would fish all day Saturday and Sunday morning. Looks like the temps are going to be nice too.

Looking to head out early Saturday morning (with the rest of the world)...any tips on set ups, baits, presentations, depths, etc. Never fished the big pond through the ice and hoping to pick some brains for basic advice.

Thanks in advance...

Advice = Wear a PFD. There has been talk of a SW wind and the rest of the lake is not locked up anymore from the looks of the MODIS imagery pics. I have had 7 inches of ice break up on me out there... It's not fun.

I'm new to this also, but I've had good luck using a 40" H rod with 10-20lb braid with a 5ft 14lb floro leader with a 1oz PK flutterfish spoon in chrome...I've been jigging about 10ft off bottom real aggressively and as soon as you see that laker launch off bottom start reeling and so far they've all smoked the spoon....

Is it still safe enough to walk out from 21st street or the lester river area? Planning on heading up tomorrow early morning from Mille Lacs. Thanks

Short answer is yes. I saw many wheelers and snomowmobiles out today in the warm and windy weather.

Cool thanks for the help! Also where can a guy get frozen smelt and a couple jigs at 7am? Is there a bait shop nearby?

The Bait Box in East side of Superior might be your best bet @ that hour-ish??

Maybe ICO or Holiday on London Rd? Sorry I can't be more help to you, commitments have kept me off the ice lately.

What the heck, there most have been 2-300 houses out there when I went by Sat morning up to Two Harbors sledding and no reports how the fishing is going or any pictures! frown

This is a bad picture but this T-Wolf was out on the lake about a 1/2 mile past the last portable. He was closer then it looks but crappy cam= bad picture! frown

If you are fishing the North Shore you can not buy bait in Wisconsin and bring it over the state line so Chalstroms or fishermans corner will have to do for smelt or minnows Prior to 9 am when Marine General opens.

As for a report.... I fished off pump house all day Saturday and never landed one but lost 3 on the way up...was fishing in 110 fow "bobbin " for just lakers and on Sunday went up to the French and fished til 10 but had to keep moving due to the ice breaking up and blowing out so I don't think there is any ice left there after yesterday

Open water from just before McQuade harbor. I just left the ice at Brieghton Beach getting strong offshore wind not looking good for the ice today.

JarJar,

I've searched the Mn DNR's website looking for a prohibition on bringing minnows in from out of state and can't find anything. It has been my understanding that as long as the minnows were purchased from a licensed dealer that they are legal for fishing Lake Superior. But don't take my word for it. I'm not going to be paying anyone's fines in the event I'm wrong. Contact the local CO's for clarification.

Page 29 of the regulations say you have to have the frozen bait labeled by the MN DNR or a negative fish health certification. So yeah, I would avoid crossing state lines with frozen bait.
