The main purpose of this Contest is for the members to have some fun sharing their success and stories with a little friendly competition thrown in. Let's have some fun!

1. All birds submitted must have been harvested within the Rules and regulations of the state that they are hunted in.

2. Teams will be randomly assigned with equal,(as possible) assignment of youth hunters(those 17 or younger at the beginning or the Contest) and different subspecies hunted. Deadline for registration will be midnight(cdt) March 27, 2014 in the Contest Sign Up Thread. The teams will be posted as soon as they are determined and entered onto the site.

For members who miss the deadline a substitute pool will be kept where members will follow the same rules and can submit a bird but they must register by April 15th, 2014. They cannot harvest a bird before they are registered. If a team has a member that has not posted or responded to email by May 13th, 2014 a member from the pool will be randomly drawn to fill spots on teams with "no shows" just to keep it even.

Each team will consist of up to 6 hunters. At the start the teams will be named FM Forums 1, 2, 3... Teams can come up with their own name at anytime. Please decide on that one name before having the default one change,(no multiple name changes allowed).

3. Submitting birds for scoring. There will be a submission form posted for use by the start of the Contest.

You will need to get a witness for the measurements of spur, beard and weight. Both you and the witness will need to sign the form verifying the measurement as being correct. All measurements will need to be in standard measurement,(Inches/pounds).

In addition to the submission form members will need to post three photos,(there will be a submission thread for this). If you need help posting pics let me or your team mates know. One a close up of the spurs with a ruler/tape measure showing length,(you may need two pics if the spurs are different lengths). Also a second photo with a close up of the beard doing the same. The last picture should be of you,(the happy hunter with your face mask pull down) holding up your beautiful bird. We want to see the whole bird as well as what you look like. One of these photos should also have your 2014 filled turkey tag in it. If your state does not use a tag system then write the date the bird was taken on a piece of paper and include it in one of your photos.

When the Contest starts there will be also be a link to submit your filled out form. If you are not able to submit you bird online, send Borch or team member an email and we'll make arrangements to have it mailed and posted.

4. Scoring of the bird will be based on the NWTF scoring system. Each member will be able to score one bird(the first bird taken for your season even if you are allowed more than one) for the Contest.

The top 4 scores for each team will be used to calculate the team's final score. The team with the highest final score will be the winning team.

Also in addition to the team competition we'll have an individual youth,( those 17 or younger at the beginning of the Contest) and adult competition. We'll use the same bird and score for the bird submitted to the team competition. The highest scoring bird will be the winner.

5. The Contest will run from April 1, 2014 until June 10, 2014. Winners will be announced after that time.

Winning teams and individuals will earn the right to Advertise their great expertise and skills as the 2014 HSO.com Turkey Contest Winners in their signature.

The 2014 HSO.com Forum Members Turkey Quest is a Contest created and operated independently by HSO.com forum members and is not officially sanctioned or managed by the site itself.

Let's have even more fun this year!!!

One more day to sign up for this fun contest.

Don, I'd like to sign up my son for this. He doesn't have a username on HSO right now. Can I sign him up without a username? Can I just sign up as me, with the understanding that it's my son who will be the hunter?

Posted

Scoot we have had past members do that and sign him up as a youth.

Borch is the man behind this contest, but Archerysniper is right, we've had youth enter in the past without being members.

Thanks guys! I have now signed up, but I won't be the hunter- it'll be my 9 year old son, Ryan. He's very, very pumped about this coming season and can't wait to try to shoot his first animal with his bow.

Just checking can we upgrade birds?

Posted

i vote yes. you can in the other contests i am in 2c

Phew! Almost missed this! After something like 14 days and a big skunk last year, I'm looking for revenge! I've got three days to get it done this year during the first season. Archery bird or bust!

Posted

I would like to be able to do this as well, but I understand the rules are in place!

Nope. But only the 4 best scoring birds per team count so there isn't necessarily a penalty for shooting a smaller bird. Do this to level the field as many have only an option for one bird.

First bird during the contest. Some guys get an early start so birds short before the contest start date don't count.

last year was tough, but i eventually got lucky wink

saw quite a few birds out in the fields feeding during our nasty winter down here

lately, my scouting/roost listening plans have been derailed by cold, wet and/or windy mornings. weather supposed to be much better starting this weekend, so i gotta get out and make sure they are roosting and hanging out in the traditional spots

plus, i have a new property i have to get a better handle on.

first season opens 2 weeks from monday cool

Good Luck.

Birds around here are still grouped up and hanging close to food sources, especially farm yards and feed lots.

Dang I missed the sign-up.... Anyway a guy can still get in? I am totally new to the contest... so I am not sure on the specifics.

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.

Jeff and I fished Saturday and half day Sunday, targeting whitefish, ciscos, crappies, and perch.  The bite was tough for us.  We ecked out a few, but nothing special.  Highlight of the weekend was the sled ride into Wolf Lake and having an eagle swoop in and eat a rock bass we had on the ice.  All in all, not a bad way to waste time.
