Has anyone fished Rice lake in Rice County?

Back in the day we would catch the largest Crappies and bass and Pike on this lake! Being part of the Cannon river, it has some pigs in it!!!!

I have seen a 18" Fat boy Crappie out of this lake in the winter. That fish had to go 4lbs. It was caught on a tip up with a 6' sucker!!!

Anyone out there tearing it up....

I dumped my 14' on the river a few years back and caught a few Crappies and bass!

I haven't been on the lake for years. It use to be feast or famine out there! How are people getting on the lake for ice fishing these days?

My buddy owns a lot of the land surrounding it, so I am around the lake quite a bit (setting trail cams, clearing brush, attempting to put a canoe in but realizing it's impossible). Both of us agreed that we have never seen it so weed choked as we did this summer. That combined with how low the water got made it seem like it was impossible for anything to live in it, especially being this was during a horrible heat wave! It really dried up and the weeds became dead and matted, worse than I have seen it in the past.

We normally drove a wheeler up the channel. I think that I'm going to fish it Sunday! Anyone in? That lake will freeze out this year!

Back in the day the gate used to be open, last time i drove by in this fall it was open.

Anyone wants to throw a few flags Sunday, I'll be on it!!!!!

Flipper do you remember looking down the hole and the Pike would just destroy your lure. Those Sun fish and Crappies would be sitting in the currant hammering your jig..

Man I miss that lake.

I fried my very 1st boat motor on that lake. The weeds were so bad trying to get out their!

Yes, and other times nothing. We would catch some big crappies on some small sucker minnows back then. We ate some that could have been mounted. Didn't matter much cuz that slough will smother out every so often.

I remember a Crappie contest out their and the guy who won it had a Crappie that weighed almost 4lbs. But it was only a 16.5" Crappie. Well come to find out when my buddy mounted it for him, it was full of weights that he had pushed down its throat. I'm talking a 1lb of weights that you use on the river.

I talked to the person that lives there. He set a spear house and saw lot of carp, not much else.

Also back in the day when you caught them fish was before the new road culvert went in and that dropped the lake level a couple of feet or more.

Used to icefish this lake for 3 years straight--often limited out on one or two fish species. Take your pick. Swedish Pimple was the ticket without a fail. That was from 2001-2004. After that, it went downhill from there. Noticed quality of lake changed dramatically after the new road culvert was put in place. The last visit I paid to this lake was 2009 or 2010 when I got a text message from an old friend who ice fished in the area and wanted to show me his new gizmo underwater video. He was trying to buy some bites and couldn't. Crappies, sunnies and perch all were nice sized but nothing to brag about--good keepers to bring home, fillet'em and fry'em. Until today, I often wondered how Rice Lake is doing until Rubber Ducky brought it up--I have to get in this discussion and chime in. wink

We used to fish the bridge for Sunfish and it was killer at times. I do know what you are saying about the culvert. It used to pour a lot more water in their then it does now.

Its too bad it used to be a fun lake to fish. Was on it a couple of times with a Duck boat! Did manage to pop a few ducks..

I remembered the bridge. I remembered catching limits of crappies on consecutive days. Then boom, northerns--limit out in 15-20 minutes just like that. Thanks for reminding me how much fun it once used to be in the glory days, RD! No bridge, no fair play, no fun!!! (Smh). I want that dangnabit bridge back, for goodness sake cryin' outloud!

To anyone that plans to go out I would not recommend taking a non 4wd or and vehicle you will get stuck going up the launch. Its very steep and rutted out.

+1, Mike! Been there, done that due to my youth and ignorance. As I got older today, I had to crack up--thanks for the reminder, Mike!

I have a Nissan murano with and and I got out fine. After dodging as many drifts as I could on the way off. Altho I think the snow on top of the creek at the launch was worse. I kept sliding back n forth. To anyone wondering its very shallow there and the ice is frozen through to the bottom. When I'm talking steep entrance exit it's very steep.. Its not legitly a boat launch. Feels like your driving into the ditch onto the lake lol

That should take care of the carp. smile

Where is the lake not less than 3 feet? I went there the other day and never found anything deeper than that.

Ah, drill a bunch of holes like a Swiss cheese effect. Keep moving...you will find some depth changes. Get familiar with this lake is the only way you can do--get on the lake and feel it out. For those who knows this lake well often do not give away the whereabouts, why? It is a very unique lake we want to keep the main population at bay. It is what and how it is. smile Feel free by agreeing to disagree.

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.

Jeff and I fished Saturday and half day Sunday, targeting whitefish, ciscos, crappies, and perch.  The bite was tough for us.  We ecked out a few, but nothing special.  Highlight of the weekend was the sled ride into Wolf Lake and having an eagle swoop in and eat a rock bass we had on the ice.  All in all, not a bad way to waste time.
