Coming up to Star Lake on Friday and just wondering on ice conditions. Plan to fish the west finger. Could anyone tell me if people are driving trucks out or is slush still to big of a problem? Much appreciated.

Was on Dead lake last weekend before last Friday night's "blizzard" came through (they throw that term around too loosely IMHO). 12 inches of ice with 2 inches of water on top and an inch of crust on top of that before the Polar Vortex hit, so it might have firmed up by now where there isn't snow cover. Might be easier this weekend, and the 4 wheelers we had were getting around but busting through the crust in many places; Chains recommended. We didn't take trucks out and wouldn't suggest it unless you have a plowed road to use. I'd hate to get stuck out there. Good Luck!

Report back on how you did, we haven't gone over there in a couple of years. There was a large open spot in the middle of the southeast leg of the lake all winter long a few years back, and I have always been nervous about it ever since. PM if you don't want it broadcast for all the internets to see.

Several of my friends are now out there in various places around the lake, travel has been ok but the fishing has been a bit slow except for the hammerhandles are jacking up their tackle lol. I went with one night and we were ready to leave we had just a couple walleyes and his rattle reel goes off nice and slowly, a minute later he's giving me get the gaffe so I blew the dust off it and said yes you need the gaffe shining my light down there I said you have the most beautiful eelpout I've ever seen lol, thing was like 6 pounds or so, do you think it swallowed everything you better believe it lol, we always say get the gaffe if it's nice sized not that we really use it or even get it cuz any walleye 19+ goes back and we haven't caught many in recent years, strange almost don't want to type this but we caught 2 bullheads that night I was out, had no idea they bit in the winter much or ever what a no way moment figuring you have a decent walleye on maybe and we're using livebait that's swimming around. Good luck out there. You want roughfish set up by the guy with the barnlike looking permanent hut red in color, I hope he moved it though cuz in 2 weeks I'll be in that area again. No kidding ugly nasty bullheads.

Fished late Friday night through sunday morning. Fishing was good, but slower than in years past. Still landed some very nice crappies and sunfish. Including one 11.25" gill at 11:30 friday night. Didn't limit but definitely had more than enough fish for 3 of us to divide up and have a couple meals. Also caught probably 20 northerns, 8 of which we kept for pickling. We were the only people in the spot we parked the shack, nobody within a half mile of us...
