My wife and I decided to add lab #2 this year. We currently have a 5 yo male yellow and wanted a male black. We found a litter we were interested in and after meeting the parents and owners decided it was right. He is 5 weeks, less than 3 weeks until pick-up.

Our yellow was named Willie before we adopted him, so I chose Waylon as a name for this guy.

Looking good, I think it's harder on us going outside than it is the pups

That is a good looking pup!

What does big brother think of the new addition? Were kind of thinking about adding another one, would be same age difference. Btw, nice looking pup!

Thanks. Our older gets along with everybody and everything so it hasn't been a problem. Kind of indifferent at this stage. Gets a bit annoyed when the pup bites his ears. But otherwise it's okay, allows him to climb on him and sleep next to him without complaint.

10+ weeks and growing fast. He and my yellow are now inseparable. He already knows come, sit, and down. Still trying to master the house broken part, but he is getting better every day.

I miss that puppy stage already. My guy is going to be 2 in April.

More than anything, more than the commands, just remember he's a baby. Don't push him too hard!!! There's plenty of time for training.

He looks like a keeper to me, Lunker!!!

Swell looking little dog. After about 15 of them I can say we have never had a problem with a senior dog rejecting a puppie-maybe at first for a few days.

As far as early training: don't push too hard. Funny thing, but they will sometimes seem very precosious when very young and then seem to forget it a couple months later.?! Then you start the real thing. I always start right off with "come" and the dogs name and maybe a "sit" and "out" when I put dog out. Then ease up for a week before adding another command. But everybody has their way of doing things but I believe we would all agree on notleaning on that little guy too hard. They are ALL different and ALL wonderful and loyal pals. Enjoy.

Thanks for the advice , and no I'm not pushing him. About 5 minutes twice a day treat "training" for the basics, and some time chasing a pheasant wing around. It's been a long time since I've had a pup, and they sure are fun, besides requiring constant supervision so he doesn't chew everything he can find.

Waylon and Willie, and no it wasn't posed

I hope I didn't sound to preachy. I think I was thinking more about how I am/was with my pups...always wanting them to do something too quickly instead of just letting them be a puppy for awhile!!! Sometimes hard to do!!!

Have fun and enjoy the heck out of both of "Ebony and Ivory"!

Dang but I do have a soft spot for puppies and grandkids. To me they are both great to have around but even better, they go back home to their parents. But of course first I get to ruff house with them and spoil them some. Puppies are always great to be around and I don't think there are many people who can resist giving a pat and a rub to a puppy. A fine looking pup there.

4 1/2 months. I was slightly worried about the delayed intro to water due to winter...no worries needed, he is a lab after all. Went from unsure about stepping into the water to making dummy retrieves in about 2 minutes. It helps that our older dog can show him how. He weighed in at 40 lbs at 4 months so he's going to be a biggun.

Just be careful with the cold water at this age you don't want to end up with a sour water attitude, and it can happen, Even with my older finished dogs I don't put them in the water temp is around 50 deg. in the spring, yah I know there hunting dogs and they hunt in cold water but when your trainng or putting pressure on them it's a different ball game, I personally would lay off the water untill it is very comfortable for the pup, no need to rush it you have alot of summer left..

His first hunt. Did not go great as far as action, and spent most of the time trying to control him, but good to be out with him. For now my elder will be my morning hunter and him the evening hunter, easier to work with in the daylight. A week shy of 11 months old.

I have a new Pup coming home tomorrow, adopted from the Humaine Society here in Minneapolis. He is a lad/retriever mix. Any suggestions as to getting this dog accustomed to hunting, guns, etc. without sending him away and spending a fortune? I mainly upland bird hunt (grouse and pheasants). Any suggestions as to when to get some bird wings, training items, etc. Also, ideas on what type of electric collar to look at down the road? Thanks for any and all suggestions! I recreationally hunt, so my expectations are probably fairly low, but I would like to take her out and have her hold her own and know what she is doing. I am so excited to start creating hunting memories with my own dog.

PGA I just got my dog this spring and had many of the same questions that you have. I used a book to help me train my lab. I used game dog by richard wolters and it seemed to be very simple to follow and do. As far as collars its kind of a ford vs chevy conversation. I bought a dogtra and have nothing bad to say about it. Hopefully this helps and good luck with the pup. They grow way too fast which is good and bad.

It's kind of sad. The two lakes I loved the most in this state are Mille Lacs and Burntside.  And I think we broke them both!  😕
    • JerkinLips
Went back to Burntside on Tuesday and I got "skunked again" (LOL).  Looked like the lake was a mess over the weekend, but it was all frozen solid by sunrise Tuesday when I arrived.  The new ice cleats I got worked very well on the glare ice.  Was a beautiful sunny day but cool and quite windy.  I had a nice view of my tip-up from my warm fishhouse but the flag never went up, and I didn't mark a fish while jigging.  May have to try North Arm next, or go back into the BWCAW if the ice conditions improve.

Yes, eagle swoops are awesome.  Had one happen when I was duck hunting one year in Stuntz Bay.  Stole the only duck I got that day.   Vermilion got very wet over the weekend.  Tower Cafe posted a video of a SxS driving into McKinley Park landing going through water that went over their floor board.  Burntside Lake was frozen nice and solid Tuesday morning when I was there.

Or the other book that said: The bitterness of poor quality outlasts the sweetness of a low price…   Dang, what a mess to have to deal with.

When it said. "The foolish man, builds his house upon the sand"? 🫣   Just got back from 10days on the golf of America.  By Panama city Florida.

      Venny backstrap and the fixins!

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.
