Big Stone Lake report??

Recommended Posts

Anybody see the little motorized fish house on the ice on saturday? I just remembered seeing that thing. Looked kind of like somebody shot a willcraft with a shrink ray. Maybe built off a skid steer or something? The thing had a hydraulic/robotic ice auger. What a slick unit. His website is basic, but there are some pictures of what I'm talking about. www.mygofish.net

I know there are many different ways to get onto the lake but is there one that is any better than the rest. Am heading down late this afternoon with my dad and grandpa for the weekend on the ice. May be one of my grandpas last trips so we are going to try and do everything we can to make it memorable.

We started out the weekend going off of the Meadowbrooke landing. Marked fish as soon as we were set up but were unable to get anything to take the bait. I went through almost two tanks of gas popping holes and between the three of us we ended up with three fish with only two misses. We left the perm and used the portables and went both north and south a couple of miles. Was tough going for a lot of those out there from those we talked to.

we were out there last thurs and friday. slow bite, managed 11 jumbo perch though. we also punched a lot of holes. We needed the extension in the wheel house but not in the portables. good luck.

Hello everyone, new to the forum here and was looking to head to Bigstone tomorrow. This is my first trip there, never fished it before. looking for a few perch, is there any depths or structure a guy should look for? also wondering where a good place to get on the lake would be. not looking for anyones hot spot just a general idea.

thanks

Vex. There isnt much to look for for the perch they are just roaming the main lake basin in 10 to 14 feet which is half a mile wide and 18 miles long. Perch have been best on the southern part of the lake stop at arties bait right in town he will help u out as to where to start

I was out there on Tuesday weather was beautifull and so was the fishing. We docked at mallard point and worked isolated rock shorlines and points on the Sd side. 3 of us ended with a limit 0f 12 15-17 inchers. Water clarity was gd. key depths were 2-6 ft key presentations were 16 oz jigs pithced, dragged and swam back to the boat. Hot color ws green chatruese and a fathead. We did get a couple on rattle traps blue and silver gd luck! Border battle is this weekend interested on what kind of weights come in.

The border battle weights weren't very impressive, is that usual for this lake? To me 16lbs to win seems low

If you look back at past results from this tournament it was probably one of the best years. Right now it's kind of the tail end of the spawn and the fish are probably as light as they will ever be. Most of the fish caught were smaller males still up shallow. Most of the males were still milting and the females seemed to have already dropped all of their eggs.

My buddy and I fished the tournament yesterday and felt pretty good going into the scales with a 10.63 lb - 6 fish limit. Unfortunately it was only good enough for 17th place and .07 lbs out of the money.

All of our fish came in 2-6 ft of water on jigs and minnows. We also stumbled into a pile of nice crappies in that same area. We probably caught and released 30+ crappies all over 10" throughout the day.

So how does this lake do post spawn then? Is it just going to get tougher for a couple weeks or does it not slow them down they just move out to deeper water?

That's a good question, and one I don't fully know the answer to. Saturday was only my second time on that lake. The first time was the week before pre-fishing. Hopefully some of the regulars can chime in and let us know.

From the type of lake that Big Stone is, I'm thinking that the bite will only get better from here on until at least mid-summer. The shallow bite should still be very good until at least mid-june depending on how the rest of the spring/summer unfolds. They will likely move off the shore a little bit but should be in less than 8' of water. This weekend all the fish we found were over clean/rocky bottoms. Any areas with weeds or other debris did not produce any fish. As the spawn wraps up I'm thinking the fish will relate to wind-blown shores and areas with weeds or large rock which will all have baitfish.

Last weekend we were fishing extremely slow with light jigs and minnows. I'm guessing as the water warms up a few more degrees you will be able to fish them a little faster with heavier jigs/plastics or crankbaits.

I was thinking the same but wasn't sure as I have never fished big stone, I'm headed there this weekend and will report back how it goes.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
