Middle of Nowhere & Driving WAY TOO CLOSE to the Fish House. WHY??

Recommended Posts

Posted

It's happening again.

I'm out in the middle of no where, by no roads, no other shacks. There is no reason to drive anywhere near me whatsoever.

But vehicles & snowmobiles drive unnecessarily close & within 30' of my shack & truck.

WHY are people doing this? I need to know. WHY??

If this is you reading this, please...... give us room & stop driving SO close for NO reason.

/rant off.

Glitch in the matrix? Some type of alien probe project implanting mind control chips in us? Bug to the zapper thing? Walking ice dead? Some if not many people seem to have an uncontrollable urge to gravitate towards others, especially when fishing...both open and on ice. Suppose its part of the herd mentality .... possibly a pre curser to the lemmings running type thing. Fished a favorite lake of mine yesterday that is rot with this phenomenon. Houses were stacked like cordwood around two spots with a thousand acres of nearly open ice in-between. I set up well away from either camp and amazingly found fish. And yep true to form, got buzzed by the lingering strays finding their way back to the pack......some even stopped long enough to temporarily set up unnecessarily close, but after no fish in 5 minutes, kept on moving on towards the racket and commotion.

Their just trying to make new friends! whistle

I do think some people do close "drive-by's" to see if others may have their catch sitting out side the door to know what is there and biting? confused

I do a lot of sled and porty fishing and a ways from the crowd if I can. When I see another guy way out somewhere and want to stop to ask how it is going. I will slow way down and approach their house at just an idle from a long ways out, then park a ways away and walk over. Tap on the door or flap and softly ask how-is-it-going. I have never had someone tell me to get the F-out of here or jump out before I got there waving me off. I also don't mind when guys use the same approach to me.

The funny thing is that where I fish most of the time it will be those "dam" non-fishing snowmobilers that come flying right up to you to ask "catching any thing"!! madgrin

It's possible I might know you...your vehicle and setup look a little familiar...as I get closer and closer it appears not, but maybe you want to share one of my homebrews with me and give me your opinion on it...or not...maybe you are stuck, especially in this cold weather, since there are no roads, maybe not...maybe you put your caught fish outside, allowing me to view your 'luck', then again, maybe not...I'll never know if I don't take a swing by to satisfy my curiosity...after all, we are social animals by nature, at least most of us, anyway.

Since I fish away from the crowd myself, if I put myself in their shoes and give you responses that I have received when I've asked people in a PC way why they parked next to me, I thought I'd share them with you, to provide potential answers to your question.

Yea, stop & say "Hi!" for sure! smile

But a fast drive-by out-nowhere makes no sense.

I had a fish ready to bite, a Truck drove close by and it took off. THAT is what's frustrating, don't you think??

My theory is these are the same folks that we see during our daily commute during the work week driving like animals, tail gating two feet off your bumper and changing lanes with no regard for theirs or others safety. All of a sudden, it gets to the weekend and they get out in open places and don't know what to do with themselves. Thus, they proceed to revert back to jerkstore weekday driving behavior! crazy

GPS in hand and check it out later, happened on low last year a couple times.

It does not always work! When I Set up camp in the middle of nowhere allz by myself I will post thin ice signs 360 degrees around the house> It seems to keep 71% of people including the game wardens away. The other 29% are just plain curious and ya"ll aint gunna keem em away no matter what you do! wink

This would be my guess too! With gps and phone apps it's easy to do a drive by and see what if any structure might be there.

It's simple: ignorance. And as far as looking for fish laying on the ice, do the legwork and find another productive spot.

In the summer on low it can be really bad, a boat all by its self will get a bunch of other boats driving by looking for a pod of fish they can't find. Like sinker said they want some else to do the legwork.

It seems that most people haven't evolved much past the monkey stage. Even well before the gps, idjits would buzz unbelievably close to me as well as anyone else. Just have to learn to deal with these mouth breathers...

My portable was set up 20 feet from my truck. Had a guy roll up in his suv between house and my truck.

Unreal. Can't make this stuff up. One of the reasons I don't go down to the river much anymore.

Three snowmobiles between me and my truck last night, at mach speed. WTH?

That's too bad. Just a mix of stupidity, rudeness and poor character.

I fished down there a few weeks ago, lots of people. I guess there are a few bad ones in any large group.

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.

Jeff and I fished Saturday and half day Sunday, targeting whitefish, ciscos, crappies, and perch.  The bite was tough for us.  We ecked out a few, but nothing special.  Highlight of the weekend was the sled ride into Wolf Lake and having an eagle swoop in and eat a rock bass we had on the ice.  All in all, not a bad way to waste time.
