CANOPY SAM

I've seen bigger! grin

I was really surprised yesterday morning when I saw a few Greater Canadian's hanging on our backyard river shoreline. I'm way up in NW Minnesota!

I aways chuckle when I read about 20 pounders. This one hit 13 on the digital fish scale. It is a huge bird. There are 20 pounders out there but they are such a small subspecies that it rules out the majority of claims. A true 20 locked up must look similar to the small Cessna that I first learned to fly in.

First goose triple of my life. My nephew shot 3 ducks with one shot though so he's calling me a hack.

thanks guys. We were in So Dak and actually were duck hunting and one of the guys had a friend come down for the morning from Aberdeen. We were about to head in and about ten geese were flying pretty far off. The guy from Aberdeen got on his goose call and I had never heard what was coming from his calls. He sounded like the best Goose band that ever played; Louie Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, AC/DC, Rolling Stones and Beattles all playing together. I looked at my other buddy with this look that was priceless. It was so cool. Next thing you know as these geese were flying they heard the sweet music and turned our way. It was so far away I couldn't believe it but figured it must be a coincidence. He kept calling and they kept coming. The guy frankly sounded better than the geese and I think he may just be part goose.

It was our last morning hunting and man o man did that end it in a way that was like the icing on the cake. If goose calling is an art this guy was Rembrandt.

We were actually pheasant hunting too its funny because we duck hunted the spot before pheasant opener and he flushed a rooster on the way out. So Pheasant opened and we go to search for the one he flushed decided to take my gun with a plug since I know waterfowl hang out there too. Well with no luck on finding the pheasant we are walking back a trail that has cattail swamp with a canal on each side of the trail and all of a sudden Tango jumps off the trail into the canal and up the bird goes. I swing my gun and thought at first it was a hen pheasant because I seen grey hut as my eyes focus I see duck I fire one shot and it drops right in the canal, I tell tango to get the bird and he runs and grabs it and brings the bird to my hand. Couldn't be happier with my boy!

Have not been here in sometime. Thought this would be a good opportunity to get back on here. Got out for the C season, arriving just before sunrise  and the birds were already on the ground. Started with an aggressive calling sequence "Purr into a loud Yelp" there were birds North and West of my location responding. This guy decided to take a look about 30 minutes later. He got within 5 feet of my blind full strut. Something I have never heard before he started to hiss at the decoy.  Not a great shot at that range but sealed the deal.

Very nice! I was kicking myself real hard this weekend for forgetting my fish finder at home. I did manage to bring this smallie in, but they were tough to pattern for me and this was the only noteworthy fish of the weekend. Hope the water temps come up and I can get back next weekend!

Nice boat Raven! I think I saw you out buzzing around in Wakemup this weekend!

I got out on the Cass Lake chain this weekend with a group of 10.  We found walleyes still hanging out shallow and scattered.   Jigging with shiners or gulp in 4-10 fow got several walleyes in the livewell.  With the heavy wind we also had a good daytime crank bite.  In the evening trolling cranks was productive as well.  Saturday morning I stuck a 43" musky trolling for eyes. Not a great photo but I was fishing by myself and wanted to get it released quickly. Panfish were hard to pin down with them bouncing shallow and then disappearing with each weather change.  With wind gusting to 25+ miles per hour finesse presentations were difficult. Water temps ranged from 53-60 degrees.

Spent a couple hours on German. Slow fishing, just a couple small sunnies, the boy and I where happy to be out though.  Water temperature ranged from mid 60s to mid 70s. No fresh vegetation and dirty water. Must still be running a bit behind despite the warm weather.

Got to get the first fish guts on it yesterday!

Interesting. So the sows are still in shallow? We fished 10-24' the past 3 days and have done well with a lot of 14-18" eyes using Lindy rigs and rainbows.
