Kettle... remembering you shot sandhills,, my brother was saying a friend of his does alot of waterfowl hunting also. He has told people he hunts with if they get a sandhill anywhere near his dogs he'd do serious bodily harm to them.

This guy claims sandhill cranes are  flea infested creatures.

You have any ideas? It's just what he was told

My buddy has a Chesapeake retriever but we don't bring him with crane hunting for that reason. They have an affinity for stabbing dogs eyes out. Typically if they aren't completely dead when they hit the ground they don't run like geese. I typically hit em with my barrel and that finishes them. I've had them try and stab me or kick me with their spurs.

We killed one goose hunting with my buddies dog and it was dead. He wouldn't pick it up just barked at it. Must smell way different than ducks.

I guess they have mites but haven't noticed them. Never seen them on them or the meat and never see "rice breast" on them.

My buddies dog is named teddy after Teddy Roosevelt. He went 231/232 ducks and geese retrieves this year.

They are quite the dog. He's an absolute machine, well trained, never breaks early. They have a reputation for being stubborn and mean but that dog is just friendly and would hunt everyday all day if he could. Fortunate that he comes with on the trips we go on.

Many years ago it was legal to shoot cormorants.  My Grandfather at the time also had a chesapeake bay retriever and he said that dog would retrieve anything in the worst conditions.

One time he told me he shot a cormorant.  The dog swam out out there and refused to pick it up.  Apparently because they are so nasty, stinky, and greasy.   He said its the only bird that dog would not retrieve in 11 years.

They definitely are stinky birds, the cormorant that is. The Sandhills don't really smell. When you clean them it smells more like venison than waterfowl. We figured he wouldn't pick it up since they must smell similar to chickens and my buddy has trained the Chesapeake to not go after their chickens at home

Do you guys eat cormorant?  Even Indians call them fisheaters, and they don't eat fisheaters! 🤮

I have not eaten one, they are protected generally here in the states and Canada although there have been special seasons for population control but I don't think it was harvested for meat. I've hunted in countries where they are not protected and was with someone who shot one, I didn't eat it but it just stunk after I picked it up.

Si…

Duck Commander probably makes a Spanish call… with translation sub titles.  But I bet the reeds don’t match the noise.

They can’t see red down there either, or there’s so many it doesn’t matter?

Nice!  👍

Now what can we do to take this off topic?

Search words: crappie, freezing, diet coke, septic systems!  🤣

The boat is just a mode of transportation. We motor out to the spot, set decoys, then sit in chairs in the catails and dich the boat down the shore

Went to a place my buddy had never hunted but heard of. 90 min drive, had to put the truck on a barge to get down a river in the jungle then through farm country and across a sketchy suspension bridge. Followed by a mile walk through a jungle marsh, it was worth it. We got black bellied whistling duck, vulgus tress duck, teal, widgeon and pintail.

Their breast meat is a little more than teal, very light in color. Similar to the color of meat of a sharp tail grouse. They do taste quite good for waterfowl

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is in full swing on the south shore of Lake of the Woods and fishing is good.  Resorts and outfitters are reporting thickening ice conditions with over two feet of ice in many areas and on many ice roads.  Ice road operators continue to increase weight limits and many are now open to 1 ton vehicles pulling a wheelhouse.  Every road has different weight limits, check with each resort for details before traveling up and out on the ice.      Very good fishing this past week despite some windy days, cold and fronts.  Lake of the Woods is special this way.  As a rule, fishing activity is happening in 26 - 32 feet of water.  Resorts continue to move fish houses to stay on schools of walleyes and saugers.   Most groups are having plenty of fresh fish to eat along with bringing fish home.  A wide range of sizes of walleyes and saugers are showing up, which shows a healthy fishery.  Anglers are sorting through fish, releasing small fish and walleyes in the protected slot between 19.5 - 28.0 inches.   Anglers are allowed to keep one walleye per day over 28 inches if they so desire.  It continues to be a very good year for jumbo perch with good numbers being caught.  Other fish in the mix are eelpout (burbot), pike, tullibees and an occasional sturgeon.    punch of jigging in one hole and deadsticking the second hole.  A jigging spoon or lipless crankbait in the jigging hole and a live minnow on a hook or small jig in the deadstick hole.   Electronics are very helpful to see suspended fish, know when fish are coming through and adjust your presentation to the mood of each fish.  Most resorts, outfitters and bait shops in the area rent electronics by the day.   On the Rainy River... The Rainy River is still producing some nice walleyes and saugers, primarily in the mornings and evenings.  A jig and minnow working well.   Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing continues to be good for those targeting them.  An oversized hole, or three holes drilled together, with nightcrawlers or frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig fished on the bottom are what anglers are using.     Ice conditions on the river can vary significantly due to the current. To stay safe and maximize success, always work with a local resort or outfitter familiar with river conditions.    Up at the NW Angle... Ice continues to thicken and fishing continues to be very good up at the Northwest Angle. Resorts are spread out on a variety of areas, some on the structure, some set just off of structure in the deep mud.  A nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike and tullibees are being caught.     The ice road from Jerry's on the mainland (Angle Inlet, MN) to island resorts is open to 1 ton vehicles.  Guests drive right to their island resort after picking up a road pass at Jerry's or Point North Services.     With thickening ice, an ice fishing season through March is shaping up nicely.  Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season through March 31st.  Walleye / sauger season is open through April 14th and perch, crappie, and pike season never closes.
