Manziel Debate

Yeah Zep, is he in character tonight? Dude every time he's in front if the camera he's in character. I like Gruden a lot and he knows his football but I'm not as gullible as you and buy into everything he says.

Manziel is going to have to take a finger or two away from the money rub if he slides any further. Watch Philly take him.

Looks like most analysts and most GM's are on the same page on JF.

I bet LMIT and BigDave are just scouring these pages looking for something to hang their hats on. Ha

I remember another QB who donned the #2 in Cleveland that brought hope, his name was Tim Couch.

Cleveland clearly can draft a qb in the first round at #22. They picked Quinn and Wheeden there. Muahahahaha

Am I the only one that liked seeing the little snot nosed punk squirm every time his name didn't get called?

Eric I was having great joy in that as well. Each time a pick passed and he was sitting there the "show me the money" became less and less".

I loved how he kept checking his phone maybe to make sure he didn't has a missed call. Lol

Yep, loved watching him squirm............and honestly I kept squirming thinking the Vikings would pull the trigger on a trade.

Details on the deal that almost made Johnny Manziel a Viking

According to Monday Morning Quarterback’s Peter King, the Vikings were one of six teams that tried to swing a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles for the No. 22 pick in the first round – the pick that would eventually belong to the Cleveland Browns, which used it to take Manziel.

Had the Vikings won that race, GM Rick Spielman would have informed NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell that Manziel was their pick.

Instead, the Browns won the race and picked Manziel. King says Cleveland didn’t have a deal done with the Eagles until there were 30 seconds left on the clock.

Jay Glazer reported that Minnesota thought it had a deal with Philadelphia before the Browns upped the ante at the last second.

Minnesota, King says, finished third in the race to trade for the 22nd pick, just behind an unknown team. Minnesota would have had to give up the No. 40 pick in this year’s draft and a 2015 first-round pick.

King writes that the Vikings weren’t convinced any quarterback in the draft is going to be a star, but head coach Mike Zimmer liked Manziel. He got to know him a little better during a private meeting following Manziel’s pro day last month.

At one point, Zimmer said to Manziel, “I’ve been waiting all my life for this chance. Can I trust you?’’ Manziel said yes. Manziel told Zimmer they would win Super Bowls together. Zimmer loved it. Zimmer wasn’t sure whether he trusted him totally, but he loved it, and he loved the confidence.

Who cares? It didn't happen so its water under the bridge. Its speculation and shouldn't be treated as more than that.

I think we all knew this on Thursday night...maybe not the specifics but that they wanted JF in the 22 spot.

Personally, I would have been ok giving up our 1st next year to get him...I think he's gonna be that good.

I'm ok with the Bridgewater pick at 32, too. I'll wait and give him the opportunity to either make it or not. I think he can be really good too.

Doesn't read as very speculative at all.

That's because it isn't. They wanted him and they blew it.

I'm with you zep they should have made it happen.

Its speculative because it isn't directly from the mouth of the people in the room. Again I ask why does it matter? IF they wanted him would they make a trade with the team most likely competing for the same guy at 8? Would they then pass him up at 9 if he was truly their guy?

They wanted him and they blew it.

They blew it alright...not once, not twice, but THREE times.

That's what they deserve for trying to get cute.

If they were ok giving up a first round pick next year to get him, why didn't they just use their first round pick this year on him?

I don't think they were ok with that deal which is why Cleveland swept in and got the pick. Zimmer insisted on getting a defensive player with the first pick and were hoping Manziel would slide and they could trade up. In the end we get the consolation prize..Tinyhands Bridgeflopper.

I have said it before and I will say it again. When the QB touches the ball on every play he is the most important guy on the field. He is the one calling audibles etc. They blew it by not taking him right away. Who cares about some donkey on D. We have had several defensive studs in franchise history. NONE of them ever brought us a championship.

QB is by far and away the most important position and if JM was their guy they should have taken him. They blew the first round of the draft very badly. Settling on your third choice at QB is not a success, especially since we are gonna have to watch this puke for the next 3-4 years before they give up and try again. Spielman said it himself on Rosen's sports Sunday.

If they wanted him so bad they wouldn't of traded with Cleveland and let them have their 2nd shot at him, and they would of took him at #9 after Cleveland passed on him again. He must not of been as highly rated on teams draft board as he is on this site.

The best part about it all is the JM crew saying how we blew it so bad and none of these QB's have even taken an NFL snap.

I am not a fan of JM, but I would have much rather had him on the team than Teddy Toiletwater.

It's hilarious how many of my buddies the week before the draft wanted nothing to do with Teddy B, said thryd quit be a MN fan, now they act like he's the second coming of Tom Brady! Stole him at 32 they say.,, I just chuckle.,.. With the 32nd pick in the 2014 draft, the Vikings pick (any qb still on the board) and the rubes instantly crown him as an awesome pick. Norv will mold him... Only Time will tell if Teddy Bricklofter will pan out.

Good Luck!

The plot thickens!!! Maybe the Vikings and Browns should just trade QB's since they both wanted the other one.

Did a year of dysfunction cost the Cleveland Browns their preferred quarterback in the 2014 NFL Draft?

Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, the 32nd overall pick last Thursday, was on the board when the Browns traded the 26th overall pick and a third-rounder to the Philadelphia Eagles for the 22nd pick, with the intent of drafting a quarterback to compete with current starter Brian Hoyer.

According to reports -- vehemently denied Monday by coach Mike Pettine -- the Browns were primed to select Bridgewater but at the last minute switched their choice to Texas A&M sophomore Johnny Manziel.

Bridgewater said Tuesday on the "Dan Patrick Show" that he informed agent Kennard McGuire that he did not want to play in Cleveland.

"I actually told my agent that's not the place where I wanted to be," Bridgewater told Patrick Tuesday in the midst of several rounds of media interviews.

Almost as crazy as the people who think the player that a bunch of teams passed on and slid on draft day is the next (insert your all time best rated qb here)!

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
