Yeah, this is the type of bonehead move that has made them a punch line for the league and raises the stakes on all the bone head moves they have ever made at the QB position.

WHY?????? What could possibly come out of this? Apparently they had 3 million sitting around they needed to spend? He has worse stats than Ponder for cryin out loud and Ponder sucks. THey should cut both Ponder and Freeman, start Cassel and use MBT as the #2.

I like it. He can't be worse than Cassel or Ponder. We aren't going anywhere with either of them. Freeman has a rocket arm and he's mobile. and he has weapons here in AP, Jennings, Patterson, and Rudolph.

It's a win no matter what for the Vikes at this point.

Either Freeman shows he's a good QB and we keep him or he bombs, we dump him and we get a high draft pick with the ability to grab a top QB prospect in next years draft and we lose Musgrave!! smile

So did (Or will) the Vikes drop? Ponder? I can't believe it would be Cassell, or do they drop someone else from the roster?

Quote:

Josh Freeman's one-year contract with the Vikings is worth $3 million.

Christian Ponder has a base salary of $1.29 million and Matt Cassel is making $1.65 million for the full year. Freeman is getting $3 million for just 10 games. ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio speculates this is a sign the ex-Buc "will be given every chance to claim the job." Cassel was tentatively expected to start Week 6 with Ponder (ribs) hurting. The Vikings likely won't tip their hand until much later in the week, but it's hard to see Freeman getting familiar with the playbook in seven days.

I dont hate the signing, but would have liked to see a second year option that are incentive laden based.

I do not like adding a potential wildcard to a locker room because there is definitely a reason he fell out of favor in TB and it probably wasnt solely because of performance. We dont need a cancer on the team, we just got rid of one this offseason.

IMO he is possibly a better long term solution than what we have, but this shouldnt change any draft/offseason plans of QB.

I see zero downside to the signing, unless you happen to be Ziggy's accountant.

A competition between Castle and Freeman sounds better than drafting a guy and then waiting another 3 years to find out we have another bust.

I could go on about how I drink the Kool-Aid and how Freeman will be our guy for 6-7 years. Probably won't happen, but its not impossible.

They could pretty much close their eyes and pick anyone of our defense players, none of them are doing anything there anyhow.

I am pretty sure Ponder is on the block right now, and if we dont find any takers, I would assume MBT will be the victim.

I am of the thinking Ponder will be placed on IR if no takers in a trade. That way they can still keep MBT and Cassel.

Third string quarterbacks are dime a dozen. That is why we have two on our team. Cassel proved last week that he is a solid #2 guy. Came in when the starter went down and gave us enough to win. Probably not a bad thing being the 33rd, 34th, or 35th best QB in the league.

MBT is just another Ponder. MBT=strong arm and Ponder=smart guy. That is great, but they both will not be long term, producing starters. Lets all be realistic, we just watched a quarterback we hoped was going to be the guy, fail. We do not need Ponder 2.0. Guys like Andrew Luck are good quarterbacks who don't sit behind someone and one day "get it" to become great quarterbacks. MBT will be gone.

I now believe Spielman and Frasier when they said Ponder is our starter and Cassel is the back up. After this year Ponder will be cut and Cassel will still be our back up. Ponder will probably never touch the field again in purple because he proved he is not good enough to remain here as the starter. We just need a new starter. Freeman? Who knows!!!

Vikings currently have 4 third string QBs on the team.

Why, just so that he can hold out before camp? Those kind of contracts never work out well for either party. These players will just hold out for a better contract, and the Vikes would take it in the shorts if that happened. I hope Freeman does well, earns a big contract, and we can move onto better times.

Not likely to happen, but if it doesn't, we can draft Teddy B. or Johnny Football and I'm just as happy. Either way, seems like a win/win to me!

I will burn everything purple I own if the vikings draft that POS "Johnny Football". He is a little punk and will NOT be an NFL Franchise QB.

He is a Michael Vick wannabe, I think in the right system he will be good, until he gets injured.

Only because of the 4 letter network's infatuation with him. He is just another "Heisman" QB who will never amount to anything in the NFL.

Well I would be happier if the Vikes got Bridgewater, or Boyd, but I dount either would be on the board by the time we pick, I am assuming we will be close to the 10th pick.

Let's ask LMIT, Buck or RRR and get their insight. They always seem to know what is best for the Vikes. wink

Another desperation shot for the purple.

Another back-up QB on the roster, (that makes 4 in our line-up)

How about spending that $3 million on a LB or DB?

Give Matt the shot and let the season roll, we either succeed or fail and get a high draft pick.

Sounds like Ponder's injury might be worse than we have heard, not the injury itself, but the way the rib is now positioned after the injury, if he takes the wrong hit it could pierce a vital organ.

Even at that, you still have MBT and Webb.

Once you get to a 3rd stringer, the season could be over or you could catch lightning in a bottle, Hoyer (Cleveland), Glennon (TB).

Just saying.

Grass is looking greener to the east, jumping off the wagon.

GO PACK GO!

Those of you bashing this move are misinformed.... We gave up NOTHING to get him here. THis is a guy that had 25 tds and 6 ints in 2010. You dont put up numbers like that in the NFL if you're a stiff. This is a LOW risk HIGH reward situation. Chances are its not going to work, because its the vikings and for the 34 years ive been on this earth its never worked, but who knows. Its DEFINANTLY worth a try.

All this off the field nonsense is troubling, but i also think Greg Shiano is a lame duck coach making a desperation move by benching and cutting Freeman. Freemans stats plummeted as soon as this guy took over and i dont think its any coincidence.... Any coach that endorces throttling the opposing team when they are in victory formation kneeling the ball is a MORON imo. Go back to college Greg, you may have a chance there.

Good move all they way around, even if it doesnt work.

Actually its 5 if you count Webb haha

You're right! I thought I was counting Webb but I must have forgot to count the guy with 3 last names.

They have 4th string owners too so I guess it balances out.

Seems as though they have a 3rd string defense to go along with their 5 3rd string QBs as well.

I don't care for his antics any more than you do but I certainly think he is the real deal at QB. Not too many better than Johnny Football.

I've done my part to lower the lake level by pressure washing my dock all the way up to my upper deck. I figure that lowered Vermilion by at least 1/4" lake-wide....

On the south end...   This week was a great week of walleye fishing on Lake of the Woods.  In addition, saugers, jumbo perch, some monster pike and an occasional crappie in the mix!     There are three fishing techniques being used to score Lake of the Woods gold (walleyes).  First, drifting or slow trolling crawler harnesses.  In a nutshell, using about a 2 ounce weight and a 3-4 foot harness with a spinner, two hooks and a crawler.     A tip for crawler harnesses, hook the dark part or head of the crawler on the front hook.  Try to keep the crawler straight between the two hooks.  Try to leave a few inches of crawler off of your last hook and pinch off the rest.  The walleyes and saugers will still hit it, but you will create more hookups.   The second presentation is a jig and minnow or frozen emerald shiner.  Basically locate fish out on the mud or on structure, anchor up and jig.  If you are amongst fish, they will find you.     The third way walleyes are being caught, and some may be surprised about, is trolling crankbaits.  Some have put on the trolling gear when the walleyes weren't as cooperative or when the fish are spread out.  Lots of success catching good numbers of walleyes and good sized fish.     Lots of fish out over deep mud or deep structure.  The deep mud is holding a lot of walleyes in 21' - 27'.  Electronics will help you mark fish.     There is another shallow water bite still taking place anywhere from 5 - 17'.  Much of the shallow bite has to do with feeding opportunities on various minnow spawns, crawfish and hatches.  Not every walleye is targeting the same prey.  Lots of opportunities.  .   Gold, orange, chartreuse, glow and pink, or a combo of these colors, are a great place to start.   Anglers can keep a combined limit of 6 walleyes and saugers.  Up to 4 can be walleyes.  All walleyes 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28 inches may be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one day's possession.  If you catch a limit, eat some fish and freeze a couple, make sure to count your remaining fish left over for your possession.   On the Rainy River...  With some rain in the area, the river was flowing with a strong current and some debris this past week.  Debris has slowed considerably and water clarity is starting to improve.     Water clarity is important for walleyes, saugers, pike and smallmouth bass.  Sturgeon are much more dialed into scent to find their next meal, consequently, when the sturgeon season opens again on July 1st for the keep season, things should be good.   The fishing happening on the river is focused in areas just out of the current.  Most fish will hang just off, able to grab a passing meal but not having to expend too much energy.  Current can be good as it focuses fish in areas.   Jigging with a minnow is effective when you are on fish.  Otherwise, pulling spinners and trolling crankbaits along shoreline breaks against the current in 6 - 12' of water is producing a mixed bag of walleyes, saugers, pike, smallmouth bass and an occasional crappie.  Up at the NW Angle...  Fishing for a variety of species has been excellent and is in full summer swing up at the Angle.   For those fishing out of the NW Angle, both the Minnesota and Ontario waters of Lake of the Woods are producing a number of nice walleyes.  Many fish have slid off onto deeper structure.  With that said, there are so many areas of forage on LOW, walleyes will be in numerous spots, some shallow and some deeper, taking advantage of opportunities.  Lots of fish to be had, just go fishing.   Jigging structure has been effective.  When fish are a bit spread out, pulling spinners with crawlers or trolling crankbaits is catching a lot of fish.     In this part of the lake, expect to catch walleyes, saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, pike and smallmouth bass.   Muskie anglers are after it and reporting good numbers, and in true LOW style, some big fish over the 50 inch mark.  Summer patterns are starting to take hold, but fish are holding in a variety of areas still.

We got .5” last night. Hasn’t affected the lake level yet. It’s been steady the past three days here (Frazer Bay). RLG

Water Levels I believe are now at a record high with all the rain last week, and more fell last night.  I hope it stops raining soon for all the people who have businesses and live in the area.  Water can do so much damage.

MarkB, Where did you find the perch?  I would love to get into some of those.  MarkB are you fishing more on the east or west end?

Where are the water temps now with all the rain?  Coming up for a week on Friday and want to see what I can find out.  I have had a very poor fishing so far this year.  New to the area and just can't figure it out.  Home is on the west end of big bay.
