2013-2014 Gopher Hoops!

It's like Tubby all over again...late season collapse, no confidence, losing games they should win. No defense hurts. They have a great RPI and SOS, got some decent N/C wins and played Syracuse tough. Then suddenly they can't beat the bottom half of the conference.

They aren't dead in the water, but it's a tough road to hoe all the sudden with two ranked opponents in a row. Short of 3-0, they will need to do some damage in the BTT.

The way the at-large's are stacking up, they need to beat Penn State at home and win their first BTT game to be on the bubble. At that point, parts of their resume might get them in. To make a stronger case, they need to spring an upset in the BTT. Nothing's a guarantee. As of today, Lunardi has them in, Palm has them recently kicked out. They are on the teetertotter as much as anyone, not a position of strength considering they will be one of the first teams lost if an upset is sprung in a small conference tournament.

Now's a good time to get hot...

I think they need a minimum of two wins in the Big Ten tourney, three to be sure.

The Penn St. game is a matchup that this program historically loses. How many BTT wins needed then?

Rematch with Penn State this week in the BTT, Nebraska looking like the 6th Big Ten team in after beating Bucky in Lincoln. Gophers need a couple wins to even think about an at-large unless they want to fall back on SOS and RPI. Road/Neutral and conference record are not good.

I would rather see them in the NIT rather then being 1 and done in the tourney, I think they could win a couple games in the NIT

Joe Coleman might be in the building Sunday. He might have been a nice piece this year although he was very consistent in his time in MN.

That was NIT basketball at its best.... The announcers were almost laughing at times about the lack of coaching and on court decisions. I thought Bobby Knight might throw his chair in the booth a couple times....

That was an ugly game by the gophers, dumb turnovers/missed free throws/coaching mistakes... But they did win and I think they have a very good chance to beat SMU and wind the NIT!

Good question. Malik hasn't been able to hit the broad side of the Barn since the Nebraska game.

After they blew it in regulation I thought they had zero chance to win. Almost had to turn it off it was so ugly but they pulled it off. Hopefully they learned some things for tomorrow night.

That was bad coaching at the end of the game and bad officiating through out and also was the worst game I have ever had to listen to with Knight in the broadcast. That guy was a jackhole when he coached and is still an arrogant jackhole!! All he did was talk when he was a coach...guess what Bobby it isn't 1970 anymore!!!

My take - Knight is still arrogant but he does explain the game in a way that people can understand. He also knows a lot, but you obviously can't give him a pass on his past behavior.

As for the game, Patino said in his post-game interview that his intention was not to foul on either possession in the last seconds of both regulation and OT. I can go either way on it. Florida State couldn't hit 3's all game so I can understand forcing them to do it for a tie. Foul them, and they arguably have an equal or better chance of tying with the intentional miss on the second free throw.

OT was ugly but you have to give it to big Mo for hitting all of those clutch free throws in OT. If memory serves me correctly, he had 6 of our 7 points in OT and went 7 of 10 from the line. Unfortunately he was only 1 for 7 from the field but he was fouled on most of his shots, leading to the free throws.

It sounds like Eliason is still a big question mark for tonight. Hopefully we don't run into the same foul trouble as Tuesday night from King and Walker.

Most importantly, even if our shots aren't there this Richard Patino team needs to rely on its defensive prowess. It's kept us in ugly games and sparked big wins. Shooting mojo comes and goes but defense is all about effort.

Good luck to the boys tonight, a W would be huge for recruiting and slowing putting them back on the map

Brings a tear to my eye and reminds me of days past when we all cheered on such a victory. From Columbia Height and Coon Rapid to Hasting and Hopkin, we were all proud of our Golden Gophers. smile

Good experience for the young players and coaching staff.

What a great way for coach Pitino and the players who gutted it out to cap off their season. Even better, we got to watch and the weather didn't knock the dish out. Go Gophers! smile

What a change from Tubby ball.Really fun to watch a well coached team. I hope he stays for more than a few years before he moves on to a bigger program.Hopefully we can get some Mn boys to stick around.Who knows maybe young Richard will want to raise his family in good ole Minnesota.. DrJ...

No kidding. Just think if those 3 top MN players from MN that played in the McDonalds game all went to the UofM. That would have been nice.

I've got a pizza bet with one of my brothers about how long before Pitino leaves for a better program. He think Richard will be gone after next season.

It was a great game to watch. Given one more year in college and Austin Hollins could be a very good player. I hope that Andre comes back healthy and regains his original form next year. Walker should keep improving and there are some young kids ready for playing time.

Seeing Osenieks out there on his ailing knee was great. The kid went out on top with little regret. Eliason provided some good defense out there even though the stats weren't there.

Does anyone know why Ahanmisi didn't play and wasn't even dressed?

People are actually excited and happy that MN won the NIT tourney? The best of the lousiest, the lousiest of the best?

Really?...Really?

I see that the bar is set high for this program. Not that it has ever changed so I suppose I shouldn't be all that surprised.

Kudos to Indiana for rejecting the offer to play in the CBI. Too bad more teams don't do the same, including those who believe they're a big league school yet celebrate NIT championships.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.

My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.

That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better

Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.

Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other

That's good news. I haven't seen any ice in Black Bay yet, but it looks like the small bays should start to freeze up this weekend. Hopefully we make some ice next week.   Below is the forecast for Cook. We should have temps mostly below zero . The bottom section below shows that it should not be windy, and no snow is predicted. All good signs for making ice.
