The water level is still higher but you should be able to fish it in the boat.

The fishing should be great with the amount of water and seeing the water is clear. The eyes should be feeding hot and heavy before winter. If I did not have plans and a football game I would be hitting the Rum for some walleyes for dinner. Good Luck

Hope to get out there again but won't be this week. Any opinions on walleyes migrating down river this time of year?

Well, if the water temp in the Anoka area is any indication of what it may be like farther upstream be ready for cold water. The warmest I saw this past Friday was the mid-upper 40's. Far colder than I expected. Good luck to ya all!

Anyone fishing the Rum this weekend? I'm guessing there might be good fishing given the lower water level...unless we get a a bunch of rain the next two days. It was way too high a year ago and well into the summer.

The rum should be awesome this year. If I do not go to the cabin I will be on the rum. Jig and minnow will be my weapon on the rum.

Any one fish the rum?  Was wondering if the rain made it all muddy or is it still clear water? I ended up going up north for the weekend and had a blast on the streams with little brook trout and Saturday I should have bought minnows and I would have had a nice batch of walleyes, but I got leeches and the water was to cold for them. O well I still caught enough eyes for dinner.

I was out Saturday morning for 5 hours.  It was a bit muddy then but no more than usual, I guess.    Friend and I caught only one small northern.  We fished many holes and trolled some deeper stretches. Nothing.  I was a bit disappointed as the river is lower than a year ago but still not down to later summer low levels.  We tried jigs with minnows or crawler, trolled raps and even tossed a few spoons.  Where are they?  Going to try Snake next.

First posting in here by moose says great northern, bass and walleye fishing. Postings have been here for 2 years. I've read a northern here, a couple bass there. Not a single caught a walleye post. No fishing was excellent type posts. Has it been that bad for 2 years ? Or is it not as good as you say?Or is everyone afraid to post they caught a walleye. LoL

Well Ron,

The fishing for the last 2 years has been hard due to the high water levels.  There have been walleyes caught in the last 2 years, but they have kind of rare, Mostly near feed creeks and back waters. Fishing in the trees is not easy and you loose so much tackle. If we can get some normal water summer water levels it should be prime for fishing, because the lack of pressure for the last 2 years. I like fishing the Rum when the water is clear, because I seem to catch many more fish. I know the Rum river in the town Princeton has been giving up some walleyes where the east and west branches come together. They coming off of crawlers bottom fishing or with minnow and leeches with floating jig head about 6 to 8 inches behind the big slip sinkers. Finding the current breaks seems to be key. When the water warms up the smallmouth will go crazy.

So to sum it up High water levels for the last 2 years have made fishing the rum difficult. The water level at this time is not overly high, but the heavy rains caused the water to get muddy. Once the river clears up the fishing should very good. Another reason there is not a lot of talk about the Rum is people think it is a secret spot. I will try to hit the rum this summer, but at this time I am focused on finding a Tom Turkey.

The gully washers the area received last night is going to make the Rum River rise and muddy. It will take some time for the river to clear up, but when it does it should be good fishing.

Monstermoose is right. although I have not really noticed the Rum to  be clear.  It is a naturally stained river, like dark rum!   I have not caught much the past two years.  I'm trying to learn how to fish the Rum and I did better a couple of years ago when I picked up a couple here and there in the deeper holes later in the summer.  Fishing is often better in October when the levels are down.  I watched two guys pull in several walleyes in a hole last October.  Friend and I caught a couple but when we were able to try that particular hole again, they were gone or just not hungry!   We did have great luck with 3 - 5 lb northerns though.  It is still a lot of fun being on the Rum and trying as you never know what you will be catching and it seems so much more remote than any local lake.  I like the Snake for that reason.

The river has come up a lot in the last week. Running high and fast in the SF area.

The Rum River is back in its bank in Princeton. The fishing should start to pick up up again where the branches come together. If you are in Milaca the dam should be a solid choice as well.

Good news we did not get much rain, so the Rum River should be dropping down to a great level for fishing. Jigs and twister tails. Should turn walleyes on the edges of deeper pockets. Top water should be the ticket for smallies. A hook and crawler should get a little of everything the Rum has to offer.

The current is good it is moving right a long. I fished from shore in town for about an hour but the bugs are bad. I think I was a pint low after the hour. No fish caught but I had to fish a spot that was not the best, because others were fishing the best 2 spots.

Good morning. I wanted to know if there is a good area on the rum that i could put in my 16' deep V lund. Would really like to float the river and do some fishing, but i don't have any map of the river that shows some depths. I have heard of the landing by the fair ground in Anoka, but wanted to see if any place north of there i would be able to put in. Thanks for any info!

I would not use a deep v around Princeton the depth of the river changes way to much. I know there are some deeper sections near cambridge, but I would still not use a deep v over there. I know there are some shallow spots around St. Francis as well.

How's the fishing on the river? Going to try today afternoon crawler rigs or jig and minnow? There seems to be a lot of traffic by my house with boats going to the Becklin park access I live right there at the beginning of the park road.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
