Heading up as well, we've been doing this for 12 years now and the last 2 have been have thrown us curve balls due to the weather. Hoping were able to find them, thinking Ash river may be a good bet based on ice out and water temps....

Just got back from the lake. Fished from Friday till this morning. Water temps ranged from 42 in the main lake to 53 in a couple of the bays. Most active fish were found on wind blown shorelines in 4-10 ft of water. Found most of our eater fish in 20-40 ft of water. Friday we boated just over 110 walleyes Saturday just over 60. Sunday and Monday were slower but caught larger fish. Pike were very active in the warmer bays and caught good numbers of a smallies yesterday in the high wind. Good luck as the water was rising steadily as we left with all the rain around.

Duck_22 thanks for the report. Sounds like you were having a good time catching.

Were you pitching jigs, running Lindy's or both??? Seems like some in our group do nothing bit Jig and some Lindy but we all have pretty good luck. Thanks again!!!

Deeper fish ran strickly jig and minnow. Shallower fish we caught mainly on larger rapala husky jerks and jig and ringworm or jig and minnow pitching into the shallow areas. Husky jerk outfished jig probably 3-1 most of the time with a very slow retrieve, silver/black produced the best action. Ringworm outfished minnow the days we were up. Pulled raps a little in shallow water and caught a few but not as much action. We did not pull lindy rigs at all.

Ducks_22... Great info... I have NEVER fished plastics up there and think i just might give it a shot this next week. If you dont mind me asking can you divulge the size and color of the ringworm you were using? We always use shinners up there and i think it would be cool to show up some of my buddies using plastic!!!!!

4 in ringworms with a 3/16-1/4 oz jig head depending on the wind. Firecracker/Chartreuse and Gold Cracker/Chartreuse worked for us. It was our first time using them also but had a guy pull up next to us when we were fishing a deeper hole, started pitching them and snapped an easy 15 fish and left. He looked to be using a brighter orangish color but the firecracker was the only kind we had.

Good luck.

Rings worms are a plastic ribbed worm with a curly tail. The ones I buy are B-Fish-N Tackle but there are various brands. Hope that helps.

Someone else may remember the exact details better than me, but I know that the manager of a twin cities Gander Mountain caught a huge walleye down by Red Wing on a ringworm a few years ago. If I remember correctly it was only a couple ounces shy of the state record. It was like 17 pounds and a couple ounces and the state record is 17 pounds 8 ounces.

Fishing was tough for us Illinois guys but we we had our best luck on the dock with sucker minnows and floating jig heads, lots of non keepers and too many toothy critters.I did catch a couple on jig head and a fluke and some on storm wild eye walleye casting .

We had the best luck, with Jig and Minnow, we tried shallow and deep. Most fish were in the 25-40 FOW, and majority were keepers. Sunday we boated around 50 fish. It seemed like we would pull on a spot and if they bit within 5 minutes we would catch 10 if they didn't bite right away we would spend 30 minutes and move. We fished from the east end to west end. I will try and get some pictures up here of my daughter with her first walleye jigging, that was a pretty exciting moment for her and I. I think she’s hooked, she even baited her own hook by the end of the weekend. We also had a first and landed some dandy Jumbo perch. Biggest was 13.75”. Water was rising, warmest water was 54 but for the most part we saw 51 pretty consistently.

Back when I was a kid, we used to use those same chartruese tails on a blue spinner up on Kab. I can still hear my uncle yelling "green reaper..." every time he'd catch a fish on one.

Back from Kab last night and here is my report.. Fished Sat - Tues afternoon. Weather was great as was the fishing. Found fish in 8-12ft with a few a little deeper. Good quality eye's with the biggest being 26 1/2. Jig and shinner or Lindy and shinner worked the best for us..I tried the plastics but just couldn't get comfortable fishing them. Went back to live bait. Caught everything from big fat Pearch, Smallmouth, Saugers , eyes and TONS of pike... I have never caught as many pike as i did this year. 3 of use brought home our limit of eye's and sauger and a few perch as well. 8 guys still up there till this coming saturday. I will be posting there reports when i get updates..
