When I was out last, we found decent oxygen levels just a few inches above the ice.

Leech that is because there is a channel that connects Pulaski to Pelican.

I would like to know where this channel is, if there is one?

The truth is,when they drain Pelican,it will create a suction effect... much like a toilet does. I hear because of this, all lakes in a 20mile radius will drain down to dry land. It must be true, I found it on the intetnet grin

Is the channel navigatable?

I would like to set the record straight.... There is no channel.

The DNR trucks the water from Pulaski to Pelican Lake..... So here is the catch.... When the draw down on Pelican takes place, the DNR will need to move more water from Pulaski to Pelican in an effort to try to keep the water level up on Pelican. Which will create a draining of Pulaski in effect.

Very complicated stuff. If I need to show pictures, I can do so.

I've always wondered what happened to all the water that used to flood Pulaski 30 years ago. Is there any chance it is related to the Pelican lake water level increasing over the years?

I heard an underground pipe was used to connect the 2 lakes and suck water out of Pulaski.

Water is pumped into the Buffalo municipal storm water management system. I flows to the Crow River via Buffalo Lake. That being said, it may be related, just not in that direct a manner. Several small lakes and ponds in the same aquifer also experienced significant rise at the same time.

That is true, several lakes in that corner of the county were at higher levels than the rest of the area besides pelican and Pulaski, beebe, charlotte, Schmidt just to name a few. I never bought into the whole farming drain tile explanation for pelicans water level like many people referred to as the main reason.

I was at a local gas station yesterday and overheard one guy talking with a couple other guys. He was telling them Pelican is being drained because the Army Corps of Engineers said the earth at that location cannot support all of the water and the earth will collapse underneath it if it is not drained to a lower level.

http://mgsweb2.mngs.umn.edu/MGSBdrkTopo_Qthck/ This is a topo map roughly centered on Pelican showing depth of glacial drift and outwash materials to bedrock. You will need GIS skills to navigate it. Basically lighter colors indicate greater depth to bedrock. Note the extinct river channel (old Crow river channel? I would need to research that further and this is a new resource to me) which intersects all of the lakes that have experienced unexplained level increases post-1970. This extinct channel dating to the post Kewadin interglacial period is a well known groundwater aquifer and also source for much of the gravel mines in Wright county. It terminates in the Morainic topography NW of Buffalo where it was intersected by later glaciation. My theory is that some man-made or natural force has changed the flow of groundwater in this extinct channel leading to increased levels reaching the surface and/or decreased percolation of surface water in the region. And no, the earth is not sinking, it's actually rising a bit. Interestingly, I live on the edge of the same channel, and last fall when my well was worked on, we noticed that the current level in November was 6-7 feet higher than the long term level evidenced by limonite deposits on the drop pipe.
