It's official -- Pelican Lake (St Michael)

Recommended Posts

My boss told me someone he knows helped save a guy last week who was flipped over in his duck boat by some guy flying by in a big bass boat. I guess it was on the news........

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The Wright County Sheriff’s Office says a citizen helped save a 61-year-old Albertville man whose boat capsized early Monday morning.

At 6:27 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a report that someone was yelling for help on Pelican Lake near the 5800 block of Edmonson Ave. NE in Buffalo Township.

Before authorities could locate the subject, a citizen who was on the lake heard the calls for help and located the victim, who was on top of his overturned boat. The citizen then brought the man to shore.

The victim reported that he was stopped in the water when the wake of a passing boat caused his boat to capsize. He added that he had a personal floatation device on at the time of the accident, but removed it to swim out from under the boat, which capsized on top of him.

The victim was taken to Allina Hospital in Buffalo for exposure.

Many times it goes down to common knowledge of people and respect for others. The guys shooting and losing birds had a dog and did look for the ducks.

Which goes back to shoot ability and where ducks land. (kill zone) Don't birds just to shot them, I like having them come into the dekes, pass-shoot can really stink.

As for the poor guy getting capsized, guys need to watch the wakes they make. How is it going to effect the guys a short distance away. I remember old fishing contests, with a shotgun start, the most dangerous part was the first 5 minutes. Pray your boat would get swamped.

There has been droughts in the last 40 years and that lake hasn't gone down at all. The water is within 2 feet of the road and speaking just for my family which has farmed around that lake for over 100 years..that lake has ate well over 100 acres of our land.

You going to compensate us for our lost land?

The water from the lake is within 2 feet of the road and the surface of the lake is almost level with the road. Tell me..would you like to have a huge lake 2 feet from the road you drive on?

Plus I'd like the 100+ acres of land my family lost to that lake back thank you.

I think this has all been covered, and then some. Just for the sake of progress, I'll post a report of monday. I went out to clearwater looking for panfish in the afternoon. I found them all over, especially on the weedlines. The temp was something like 47 degrees, and the fish did not want anything to do with my bait. I drilled 2 holes together and sight fished. They would nip the tail of the bait, but never get the hook. For 2 hours of fishing, I got 3 fish.

Lake Pulaski went a little nutty a few years ago and flooded out a few people.

Speak for yourself we slaughtered them out there today. Find yourself a good pocket of oxygen and hold on tight.

Probably. Last week I needed one out there. Maybe if some of the snow melted off, you might be able to get thru without one. Watch out for the big spear holes!

While I don't fish this lake so it doesn't affect me personally, I have to point out to those who are fishing these "oxygenated" spots that this lake is basically dead and that the remaining fish in those spots are the future of the lake. I personally would leave those fish alone and fish a different lake for the remainder of the year.

Then again, maybe you're just being funny and the entire lake is dead. In which case, carry on!

Anyone know where the oxygen is highest on the lake?

When I was out last, we found decent oxygen levels just a few inches above the ice.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
