Opener Trout Report

Recommended Posts

Was up at the cabin for the windy, miserable weekend. When we got up north on Friday, we weren't too surprised to see both lakes with a good amount of ice on them still, but with the warm temps, it was all gone by sunset. Tried for some crappies off the neighbors dock as we hadnt put ours in yet, and ended up with a bunch of shiners and a few crappies. Around 9, the wind kicked up heavy out of nowhere, and I scratched my plans to fish at midnight. With the wind still blowing heavy on Saturday, we decided to fish from shore for some trout. Tried a couple of the more popular pits right away without even seeing a fish. Decided to try a little one that is way back in the woods closer to the cabin and found some very cooperative and aggressive rainbows. I was casting a small panfish crankbait and Britt was using a Watsit with a gold spinner attached to it, and took big fish honors. We kept 3 for a meal and called it a day. Can't wait till they finally stock this years fish in the lakes.

nice to see the pits still kicking out the fish...It has been a few years since I have fished them but, have to say they are one of my favorate place to fish. Nothing like being able to see your lure all the way in....

agreed, and nothing cooler than watching several fish take swings at it while you are reeling in

Could be wrong but was always aware of stocking trout in lakes occuring in the fall each year, after October 1.

That depends on the lake and what the stocking ponds have left over. For the Crosby area they do most of the stocking in the spring. In normal years this happens a week or two before the opener. Some of the lakes will get a fall stocking, and one of the lakes this year even got a winter stocking of some very good sized fish.
