Question

Ok here it goes I have a 98 100ELPTo mercury which flooded from a weak battery pulled plugs and hooked up to a full charged battery started with a wide open throttle to burn it out and the motor reved up real high and shut off quick like it wasnt getting gas repeated plug removal in the process noticed i have not spark and when i crank my motor over it sounds different one other time i came off plane and my motor went down real fast and i broke i think the keyway in flywheel no spark could this be the problem and is it a easy fix? Do the magnets under the toothed wheel spin or they stationary? they do not spin when cranking....Any comments or knowledge? Also i burned plugs with a lighter to dry could that have caused my no spark issue? Holy dump this all happend in the dark and in high winds thank god for good friends and my minnkota. Looking for a shop to bring it too but would rather fish asap please help....

Well for sure it isn't a flywheel key. Merc uses a splined flywheel.

To answer the question about the magnets, they are attached to the flywheel. There are other components (stator) under the flywheel that are stationary, could you be looking at that?

So just to clarify, was you got it to start, did it rev real high and then die? And the other incident, did that just happen or was that last season, or a different outing?

Check to make sure you didn't bump your red kill switch?

I believe you had better get a good outboard mechanic to look at your motor.

Then get a handy little booklet of some kind that discusses and diagrams two cycle outboards and read through it. Without being snide I really think you'd help yourself by being a little bit more familiar with outboard motors and their MANY little quirks. Ha Ha Ha!

Good luck. Sorry about the troubles....but there will be another weekend to fish.
