Lighting up the night in a boat

Got an idea going here.

I like to night fish, or at least hang out an hour or two after the sun goes down. But I always have a fear about hitting something (floating log etc) or someone (w/ no nav lights on).

The best solution is to provide more light. I'm trying to figure out what would be best.

The easiest solution would be just hold or mount a spot light. I've done that before, but thinking it would be awesome to really light up the night. Problem is you need a lot of power.

I don't want modify the boat ( screw down lights everywhere, pull new wires everywhere etc ).

I have a Honda 2000 that doesn't get run enough in the summer anyways. I was thinking I could buy a couple off-road spot lights and flood lights then mount them on a portable tripod. Then I would run them off the 12 volt 8 amp battery charger on the generator (in case it rains to prevent sparks )

Has anybody ran stuff off of the charger before? Anybody ever try something similar? Is this idea dumb?

Just another dumb idea I had, and I am actually going to do it this summer. I have a bunch of those trail tacks, that reflect light. They are like $6 for a box of a 100. I am going to put a glow tack on each side of every log I see in the main channel of the river, so they are easily seen. I figured a couple boxes would cover my fishing area pretty well, and they last for a long time, I have them on my trail to my hunting stand, and they are glowing strong, after 10 years.

So if you happen to travel upstream a bit, and start seeing a bunch of green glowing spots in the middle of the river at night, slow down.

Nope, just one on the top of the logs as they come out of the water. I fish enough, eventually it will save me a prop. I mean I go through like 4 props a year, so I see it as a good investment.

Well after some digging around I bought one from flea bay. It's basically same same thing as one of your lights, but then has 8 flood lights on each side of the spot lights. 24", 120w and 9000 lumens. The price was the same as one bar from your link.

Should be bright enough to kill anything that looks directly at it

I didn't know they made a combo unit like that. I REALLY like that idea with floods on the side and a spot in the middle.

I seen them when I was searching, and the only reason I didnt get one was, I wanted 2 lights, so I can aim one higher, and one lower for being on plane, and one to shine on the other times.

helped brother in law mount the same lights but one size smaller. He put them in his rod holders in the front of the bow. he has a two wire plug up under the gunwale that way he can take them off. The rod holders are the cabalas brand so they can be turned 360. Those lights work very good and are well built.

Scott, love the lights, but that rusty steel channel has got to go! It cheapens your rig. Ace sells aluminum, not sure about channel though.

Ha, ya, I was going to spray it black, to match the lights, but I didnt have any when I was mounting it. I will take it back apart, and spray it once it drys up outside a bit.

I'll be upgrading the lights this year and have been meaning to make it over to Scott's to have a look. I'll need a hand to get it mounted but I'm likely going in the same direction - LED lightbar.

Im eyeing those up too. Getting my boat out from storage Saturday. Doing an inventory of things I need/want and lighting is tops on the list.

I like 4a better than 10a, which is why i got that one....Also becasue i purchased the one 4we got before someone posted the picture of the dual beam light? LOL

That may be the 2nd light in the near future.

I was out on the water a little later last night, and there was a little fog on the water, so it was a pretty realistic chance to see what they are made of. The beam is a little narrow close up, so I will have to do some adjusting side to side. They sure are bright enough, and have plenty of distance.

The rod holders are cabalas. He cut off the top of the high lift extension,dilled and tapped a hole to mount the light.

It works for driving and when trolling and need light for netting a fish have them set to the back you can turn them on and have them shine down the sides of the boat.

Im interested to see how these work on the water. Love the setup. Is it true that for them to be effective they have to bounce off something like another boat, shoreline or something? I am wondering how beneficial they would be out in open water.
