I will be on Otter Tail the 1st week of June to fish Walleyes. I wouldn't mind spending a day searching for largmouth Bass on some smaller area lakes. Any advice on lakes in the area that have a good population of Largemouth Bass?

Thanks

Almost any of the smaller lakes in the county hold a nice supply of LM Bass. I always hate to post a lake or lakes on the internet, but some of the lakes I like that could handle some pressure would be Dead Lake, Star lake, North Turtle and just about any of the smaller lakes in the area.

Sometimes I feel the bass fishing is way overlooked in the area, but that's OK, less pressure, more and larger fish. My largest fish have come from lakes under 500 acres. Just remember, smaller lakes don't always equate to smaller fish. If you go to the MN DNR sight, you can also narrow the lakes down by the surveys. This is a great area to fish. Selective Harvest or Catch & Release will help to keep it that way.

Have fun, and good luck.

IMO, Ottertail county is the best in the state for bass fishing. Pick a lake and you will find good bass fishing

Nope... no bass here. smile

C'mon you guys, the bass fishing in O.Tail County is terribly overrated. Sure there are bass in plenty of lakes, large and small. But some of the lakes might have.....umm, like 8 bass of a pound or so and a gazillion sunfish and bullheads.

The bass lakes that have a decent population are hammered every other weekend by tournament fishers.

O.Tail County is walleye and panfish country. Better bass in southern part of state.

Why do you keep saying this? Simply not true. There are big bass everywhere. Pick a lake in OT with some weeds and it's hard to go wrong.

Thanks for your responses guys, really appreciate it.

As others have said, pretty much any of them. I have yet to find a lake in OTC that I would consider "bad" for bass fishing. If I had one suggestion, it would be to focus on lakes that have fewer cabins on them.

Every lake with the possible exception of the one he's staying on smile I know you can go up the river and catch largies and a few smallies on the big lake but has anyone caught many largemouth to speak of on Ottertail? Thought about trying it but have never got around to it.

In all my years fishing the lake, I've never caught a LM in Otter Tail Lake, but with that said, I have caught numerous fish in the river.

I have caught just one largemouth in Ottertail and it was last summer. I was surprised to see it but, there he was on the line right near the center of the lake.

Kinda strange really, plenty of good cover for them. One things for sure if they were in there and a guy liked to work docks he'd have more than enough of those to fish!

Ever see any bass tournaments out there? No?

If you see no tournaments thats a good sign the bass population is not all that impressive.

Gotta go where the action is.

The perham bass club used to fish ottertail for bass there. I know they were fishing the docks and doing pretty well. Also, i'm sure you know that Walker has plenty of bass to speak of.

There are more LMB in Ottertail than most people think, but only in some areas, and there are definitely far, far better options nearby. If you had to catch one there you could, but it's not a large population.

Posted

I realize there are plenty of better options but I liken it to someone who enjoys golfing (I don't) it's like trying a different course with new scenery and challenges, half the fun is finding them. Wasn't aware Perham had a bass club, they still going?

I think there are large ones there if you know where to look. I've never personally tried it on Ottertail.

Hit the OT river for some of the best Small Mouth action in the state. Remember cannot legally fish until opener. Do not harass the DNR pets.

Done that down by Fergus. Has anyone caught many smallies on the OT river farther north by chance?

Posted

I think the smallmouth ends at Friberg Dam and no smallies upstream from that.

Could be some in there - Clitherall has smallies, and they can get there via WB, Molly Stark, and Blanche lake.

Well, a recent bout of fish fever has swept through our area causing work on Friday to be cancelled.     My wife said her fever is so bad she had to ice it ASAP.     Real time report on the snow and ice conditions expected tomorrow night.

Without some melting, I hope it blows off.  Could get real slick if it just stays dry powder on the ice.

It was a gift but you can Jams by Jan here: https://www.boundarywaterscatalog.com/jams-by-jan/gunflint-trail-jams-12557   We were definitely wearing cleats.  They’re permanent fixtures on our boots right now.     There were a few patches of snow and the wind block of the house and truck would make a drift out of the blowing snow so I had something for a little banking.  Yes, absolutely very slippery.  Even with cleats you have to be careful.  A couple times it was difficult to open the truck door.  No traction to keep my feet planted.   Driving: go slow so you can steer and stop.  I had to use The Gripper cleats on my tires to move the house once.  Otherwise I had a patch of snow to git er moving.   Smurfy, I’ll say I was wearing Yak Trax which are just spiral wrapped wire for gripping.  No good edge for better bite.  I broke my Ice Trekkers that had carbide studs that had a good bite and balanced profile.  We also have the clunky HT cleats that have the steel teeth across the ball of your foot, more or less.   Those might even grip better on bare ice than the Yak Trax?  But are not comfortable to me and get dull.

wanderer......when you were on winnie you said no snow on the ice correct??? looks like towards the end of next week the weather looks respectable, but with no snow on the ice traction could be dangerous......especially mid week with noone around. liek to get up there but.........   i have cleats but dont think thats an option, especially alone.

Oh man, sorry.  It all happed so fast I didn’t even think of it till it was too late…   I’m contemplating my selfishness over a bowl of Quaker Oats Maple and Brown sugar (made with milk), fresh ground Caribou coffee with half and half, and Second Harvest wheat toast with Gunflint Trail WILD Blueberry jam.     I will try to not talk about food again without photo backup. 😉

Lake conditions remain very good.  Had 18 inches of ice by my house, so added 4 inches of ice in the 5 days since I was last out.  The ice was more than 90% bare.  Pickups were driving all over.  I even drove my small car out to the house.  With the lack of snow cover, I assume that the rest of the lake is in very good travel conditions.   Fishing was very good but they were quite small.  The biggest I caught was only 16 inches.  The rest of the walleyes were 10-13 inches.  Best bite was from 830-1000.  I finally managed to catch an eye after dark (the 16 incher at 5pm) and fished late enough to catch an 18-inch eelpout (yuck).  That was the signal to call it a day.   Good luck fishing, be careful on the ice and courteous to others.  And please pick up your trash.
