Ice Conditions

Recommended Posts

I was really hoping to get out one more time tomorrow. Anybody have any suggestions on where it's still safe or areas to avoid. I'm looking between Monticello and South Haven. My buddy was just out by the north access of John, he said it was about an inch thick about 20 feet out. Thanks!

You should be fine on foot, snowmobile/4 wheeler might be fine, but the shores are really getting bad. You would have to be a fool to try and drive a truck out now, I saw one break through yesterday. The front tires broke through 3 feet from shore. Even if you found a good access, your taking unnecessary risks. I'm going out tomorrow, and then I'm done for the year.

I am at Clearwater right now, not fishing, just getting the summer trailer ready, there are a few out fishing right now in the sprinkles. I did have seen a couple 4-wheelers out today also. So you might be able to get out there tomorrow unless the rain runoff totally ruins the shoreline ice. They are using the access next to the bayclub. I would say use your best judgement, have fun and good luck.

I just got back from a 2 lake run. Tall boots or biuld a bridge. I "think" a wheeler would be fine most places, since 8-10 inches of water should be easily crossed by a wheeler.

workin'

Thanks everyone. Couldn't believe the spot I checked on John, there was about 2ft of ice. Landing was a little beat up, but not too tough to walk through. Marked a lot of fish between 12-16 FOW, getting them to bite was a different story.

Once you get away from the shore, the ice is plenty thick! Went out on Pulaski to check the ice out and had to jump over a couple feet of open water but the ice was plenty thick once you got away from shore. It'll be there for a while yet.

Caught a beautiful mess of sunfish yesterday - a few pushed the tape at 9 3/4"! Lots of ice and with a cold week forecasted and south shore access, should have at least another week to 10 days of fishing left. A little sloppy on top, but plenty solid yet.
