April fools

Any chance there will be open water to fish on April 1st or will we be up there as fools hanging out in the lodge with no place to fish? Don't have the flexibility to go up at the drop of a hat when conditions are right so we had to gamble on a date.

Bring your ice fishing gear, I would bet you could still get on the main lake and chase some monster pike.

i hear you. we have the 4th thru 7th booked and am starting to get a little nervous.

Could always choose Rainy Lake or Lake of the Woods for ice fishing if there is no open water. There will still be plenty of ice on those lakes on April 1.

Everybody is getting anxious as usual me too. The river has a good flow rate right now at over 7 ft. and was on a good schedule to be open at birchdale by March 24th. Until we had this big cold snap. 10 day forcast for up there is back on a warm up. So river should be open by then. The other bigger problem is water temp. Walleyes will not want to enter river unless temp starts to rise by a few degrees. Right now temp at Manitou Rapids is 31.6 degrees and holding not on the rise like we need.

What made that 2008 year so amazing? April 5th and the ice had just gone by Birchdale. I don't remember water temps but it had to be cold!

If you look at the Spring River Conditions I post information and photos about the River... There is some shore ice in front of Birchdale but there were about 10 boats that were in the river fishing when I was there about 10AM. I am sure there will be more boats as the day goes on. They are pushing over some shore ice to get in. It is open 4.3 miles West of Birchdale Landing
