Targeting out of season species

Recommended Posts

I do have to state IMHO it is a very sorry state of mind when an individual angler "insists" on fishing C&R when known said limit has been taken. I for one would hope and want to believe that as anglers we would be above this pettiness and not for the CO or DNR to attempt to define "intent" or other gray words when enjoying time on the water. Regardless of what one's answer to that type of question may be, the angles is intentionally knowingly and willingly potentially putting fish in harms way if that scenario plays out and just a dang shame that someone has to act that way or mislead the CO when out on patrol. Its the very situation and scenario that we have all of these laws (& some quite ridiculous ones cause someone always has to "test" the system)

I understand what you're saying, but it's really no different than me being one shy of my limit and continue to C&R all day long until I'm ready to go home, then keep that last one. You can call me whatever you want, but I'd rather C&R all day long and keep one or two at the end of the day...and I think most on here would agree with me.

Glad everyone seems to be in good spirits and have their sense of humor intact. Love to see a vid of DTro's dog while someone reads the regulations on this subject.

Hope everyone has a fun Memorial Day weekend. Stay safe and free. Don't forget to raise a Flag, or a glass and tip your hat to those who made it possible.

THIS is something I hope we all can agree on.

When I do decide to keep a limit of fish, I’m usually selective in size especially when the bite is good.  But doggone it if the bite is sensational and I happen to have kept a limit already and I’m not really ready to go home yet,  you can rest assured I’ll keep on fishing and throwing them back.  If its against the law, well so be it.  I enjoy cruising down the highway at 80 sometimes too.

Remember tickets can be written for just about anything, a conviction is another story.  I’ll take my chances.  Its kind of like turning left against a red arrow at 2am with nobody in sight.

This thread sure has evolved from targeting out of species fish, but thankfully in a couple of weeks, just about everything will be fair game and nobody will give a rats a55 until next year

Happy Memorial Day weekend all, be safe & fun.

Sorry for not wording my post properly. I was trying to explain he was "intentionally" trying to deceive a CO (or at least that's how I read the post) by saying 1 person fishing for eyes, 1 for pike, etc. when in the end it did not even matter because as a group they had not met the limit for 3 ppl yet.

hope to see some of you on the water @ mille lacs on south side by father Hennepin...give me a honk, waive, middle finger, whatever I have a 16ft crestliner Nordic explorer blue.....

good luck

Myself, if I have my limit, I will go fish for something else. If the fish are really biting, I will be a pure catch and release angler. I have learned to be more than a one trick pony and can catch most of what swims in the lake. After my week at the lake, I will get in my vehicle and drive 300 miles home.

As mentioned, this topic comes up almost every year. A few years back I copied one of the posts regarding fishing for walleyes with your limit, and I have it saved on my computer for future reference. The post is below-

Hello,

Yes, you can continue to fish for walleye. You can not cull once you

have a possession in your live well. Not that it matters right now. But

the season does need to be open on the type of fish you’re targeting. I've

added that because we do get questions on whether you can fish and catch

and release a species that is closed or the season has ended.

Good luck.

Amaturefishing - that was us who said that to the CO. There was no deceiving going on there, he knew what we were doing and just smiled and went on his way. Apparently we weren't doing anything illegal anyways.

Anyways everyone have a great Memorial Weekend, be safe.

By the interpretation explained in a few posts here wouldnt that be considered "wanton waste"? crazy

Ha, good one. laugh

A meat hunter might argue that it was a wanton waste of gas or time with no results to show for it.

Finally made it back up to Vermilion after 20 days off.  The ice out from McKinley Park was in very good condition.  I walked out 5/8 mile with my portable in the morning and I didn't find any water or slush on the ice.  I had 14 inches of ice with only the top 1 inch being white.  The ice was a little bumpy in spots and smooth and slick in others.  Snow cover was less than 50 % as shown in the pictures below, looking back at the landing and out from the bay.  Many full size pickups were driving all over and there were a lot of larger wheel houses out.  I hauled my small skid house out with my side-by-side in the afternoon and was very happy to be in it after dark when the wind really started to pick up.  Felt bad for the portables around me that were picking up in those conditions.  When I drove off just before 7pm, the drifts were getting much bigger and there was much more bare ice than earlier in the day.   Fishing was quite good in the morning.  Best bite was between 915 and 1045.  The walleyes preferred the smaller rainbows and chubs and wouldn't touch a very large rainbow and shiner that I tried for a while.  The walleyes were quite small with the biggest being only 14 inches.  I did manage to catch a 29 inch northern, my biggest pike in many years.   Good luck fishing, enjoy the lake, and please pick up your trash.

For sound to return doesn't it need like, well a chamber, hills, valleys. 🤔 The Internet?    Um, sorry there's no hot redheads on this site screaming out in the wilderness for you!!

Anyone on here fishing Niles Point with a couple of kids last weekend?  You might want to let them know that the 'echo' they returned from across the lake has gone viral!    https://www.instagram.com/reel/DEQJ6lmxco0/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet   As of right now, 2.6 million views on Instagram and 1.1 million on TikTok...and climbing.  I feel happy when my posts on this board gets 12 likes! lol

I went one last time yesterday afternoon with a friend for a few hours.  We each got one, and we each missed one.  Raised about 20 birds at four spots, plus one deer.  Unfortunately, the season is now over.   It was a superb season though.  Second best season I've had with this dog.  She just had her 13th season.  I hope she can do it again next year.   I'll be sorting my sock drawer now for a couple months...

He can have this one!  Haha!  We shoulda maybe stayed on top in 14 but we could see the bottom so clearly and it was shallower than we really wanted.  The quick deeper water check yielded perch and pike right away, so we moved.  Caught plenty before dark, now pretty quiet.   I have a hunch the bay WILL fish shallower than the main lake we’re used to.   16 inches of good ice out here.

Thanks for reminding me to make sure that one is in the fish house!  It’s tradition that we watch that on the first trip every year.
