Big Watab Lake

Anyone fished big watab this year? Hows the ice and hows the fishing? I would guess the sunken islands are good spots to fish. I have never fished in winter on big watab. Thanks for the comments.

Haven't been out this year...tough winter lake....we've managed a few winter trout, but they seem pretty random...small pike...the odd panfish....open water seems like an easier plan...Does anyone know if there is an access point for icefishing the far south end??

I have never been on this lake before. Can someone fill me in on history of this lake? Water clarity. Fishing reports. Housing ect.

If you don't want to post here please email me. I am looking for a place to live on a lake in the area so most information I can gather the better

Thanks

I was out there last monday. I tried the sunken bar on the north side of the lake by all the other houses. I saw a few small pike, and a few rainbow trout, but none were interested in biting.

The lake is extremely clear and very deep. There is a hole at mid lake that hits 120' deep. Most of the winter fishing takes place in shallower water, I think.

In summer, the lake gets hit hard by the trout fishermen. There are many trout stocked each year and are caught with ease when you find them.

Overall it is a beautiful lake with great fishing at times, a real gem in Central MN. If summer swimming is your thing, I can't think of no better lake to jump in!

I love that! Ha, laugh

I have fished the lake summer and winter and there is nothing about ease catching the trout in this lake! It's not like your stocked pond that gets fished out days after they put them in. Good luck out there! wink

Don't know where you are looking, but there are 10-15 houses in view from the public access as you look across the lake.

Head out there and cut a few holes.

Hope you have better luck than I did a few days ago.

I had 10" ice where I was.

Big Watab is a trout lake, so I don't think you can spear on it.
Not sure about spearing there, but Big Watab is not a *designated trout lake

If you look on the DNR web site it does not have the little asterisk by its name saying it is a designated trout lake.

Trout lakes list

Also see listing of Minnesota's designated trout lakes and trout streams (as listed in statute)

*designated trout lake **special regulations ***located in BWCAW

It has alot of structure which is nice. We fished a hump out there the other night. and with the front that had already moved in it slowed the fishing down but we had alot of marks. The nice thing about using my fl-20 for ever is I knew exactly what Kind of fish it was by the mark. Sounds stupid but when you bond with your vex 5 days a week in the winter you come to learn what alot of different marks are by the way they appear on your screen haha I know we had tons of trout come threw, walleyes were hugging on bottom and the crappies were 7 feet below the ice. Crappies bit very very well but I cant say so for the walleye and trout.

Fished out there last weekend on could watch my jig go down 26 feet. Managed a few nice walleyes at sunset and for about an hour after. Blue Hexi fly jig with glow white and pink on the back tipped with crappie minnows. Saw a ton of fish on the Marcum just a tough bite with the cold front we had. 31fow. Finding the scatterd weed clumps seemed to make the difference.

Spearing is allowed on Big Watab Lake and has always been allowed. It has always been an extremely clear lake. The trout can be pretty difficult to catch. Guys have the most luck during the early morning hours I believe. There are some big pike in the lake.

All sizes and year classes of trout are available. A friend of mine landed one around 20" a few years back. I have had the best success for trout sight fishing in 6-7 FOW. This lake has also produced some MONSTER pike over the years. They pack on the pounds fast feasting on rainbows. Good luck!

Garett Svir, although he hasn't been on the site for a while. Your post almost sounds like a Trout fishing on Grindstone lake report for Rinehard1 Along with the "Good luck" at the end! grin

Got out of work early today and figured I would drive by the lake on my way home since I've never been on this lake before, ran into a guy at the access who is spearing and said all he has seen out there this winter is one crappie and two northerns about twice as long as his decoy and his decoy is 6" long.

I would like to spear out there tomorrow and maybe try and angle some rainbows but this report doesn't encourage me at all.

how deep where you, looks very clear

I was in 6-7 feet, the guy at the access I talked to who wasn't seeing anything said he was in 10 feet and he was positive he needed to go shallower but I think if I were to do it again I would try deeper cause its just that clear, at one point while setting up I had both doors and all 4 windows open in my house and I could still see the bottom very clearly

Unfortunately no trout which was a let down. Just have to keep trying new spots I guess.

10 and shallower is the way to go from what I hear as well. I have some friends that do it once a year and they pound them in shallow water with a slip and minnow. I have personally never done it my self yet but its a yearly thing for them so it must produce.

Shallow is the name of the game for winter stream trout. Some will cruise in deeper water, but it will rarely be any deeper then 7 ft down. Find some structure such as dead trees and points. They love that stuff. I've done very well out there when I stick to that plan.

Always a good day out of the house.  Hey moose, what kind of gun do you have a few grouse pictures back?

Flushed 3 pheasants today with Hazel but they were flushing 50 yards a head of her. Then we went by some little berries that looked black and hazels tail started going a brown bird gets up I thought hen then the bird banked and it was a grouse. It was good to get her out in the woods. I seen a few pheasants in picked corn fields.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
