just thought i'd ask what others have for their darkhouses. i was talking to a guy out on the lake near my house and he has a smaller hole and was asking me about it i replied that the size hole he had (20ish x 28ish) was a relatively good size hole. since acquiring myself a quickfish i have jsut been cutting a random hole size every time and not even thinking if it were too big or not. i want to put a floor in it with a spear hole but dont know if i should go 4ft by 4ft or if that would be way too big

thoughts and opinions please smile

I don't think there is alot of advantage to having a hole much ever 30" deep. The wider the better though in my opinion.

I make mine 48" wide and two people can comfortably sit next to each other and spear.

Mines 50x30

Mine is around 46X30. Any deeper is not needed. I know one thing, I couldn't stand looking down a 20X30 hole since my fish are longer than that!!! smile

+1

The only time I have seen a hole too wide is when I cut the hole in the ice, pull my shack over it and it is 3 inches wider than my shack... smile

I know people who have 8 foot by 30 inch holes.

When you get older, those spear holes will get smaller, mine is down to 20 by 28 , approx. size.

I did the looper steelhead thing in front of the French River once.  It was fun. I got one looper but the sight fishing aspect of it was the most fun.   We saw a couple guys limit on steelhead up close to shore and learned the black fly was the way to catch ‘em.  We didn’t have any.   My first 40+ hour day that I can remember.  Went to work Friday morning, Van Halen concert Friday night, too jacked up on the way home to call it a day so we loaded up for the North Shore.  Fished all day, drove home Saturday night.     Those crazy kids…   Chequamegon Bay and the Apostle Islands have always been a want but an undone deed.  The wander spirit has faded from my old traveling buds.  They like to stick to what they know now.

About 20" of ice in Black Bay., although that's just based on how far my auger went before breaking through.

Their breast meat is a little more than teal, very light in color. Similar to the color of meat of a sharp tail grouse. They do taste quite good for waterfowl
