Cattin the Chain 2013

Recommended Posts

It has healed enough to fish but the conditions were horrible yesterday. It got so sloppy the snowmobiles has a tough time not getting stuck. I am done for the year now. Just needed one more day. The entire lake is dirty now. Camera useless.

Next surgery April 5 on the other knee.

Good to heat that you got out again before the season ended, Don.

Good luck out there today Rick. After all the rain we got yesterday I just had to cancel the fishing plans. Stick a fork in me, I'm done for the year. I will be back in early Dec smile

Was on the river by 9am, had holes drilled and the first fish on by 9:30. Had a pretty decent school located, got fish almost steady for the first hour, then the fish vanished. We drilled in vain for the next half hour never to find the school again frown. I don't know what happened, it was pretty crazy to have fish the nothhing not even loan roamers come in. It was hard to get around by truck and by foot. The river had some pretty wicked current under the ice now too now, it felt as though the ice was vibrating eek So instead of staying in the river we header over to Horseshoe.

The ice on Horsesoe was in far beter shape than the river. There was a decent road all the way back to my favorite area grin Thank you to whoever was there yesterday, I used some of your holes. Found mixed bag of cats and crappies in the 24-30ft range, most were pretty tight lipped though. Realy had to work for the bites we got. I think we ended the day catching 15-18 cats between the two spots and a hand full of crappies.

I think I'm done with the cats for the winter, likley will get a few while fishing for crappies. But not going to target them anymore till after ice out.

I realize alot of you guys to the south have excellent catfishing down in your neck of the woods. But a heads up to the others in different parts of the state the catfish in the chain bite real good through the open water season. In fact sometimes they can become a nuisance to us walleye fisherman. So if your looking for a good time and piles of action feel free to come on over and enjoy the bite once the ice is gone.

Those darn walleyes become a nuisance to us cat fisherman too from time to time grin

All kidding aside, Icehawk is right on the money. The Chain puts out great numbers of cats through out the open water season. Imo, they are almost too easy to catch in the summer.

Headed to horseshoe this afternoon to chase some "whiskers" (Got the kitty itch for the first time while trying to learn from Rick how to catch those nuisance wallys) Lost one kitty at the bottom of the hole. NO other kitty bites all afternoon. Did manage to accidentally catch a limit of 11-12.5" crappies though! Fished in 32' and caught fish anywhere from 2 ft below the ice to 1 ft off the bottom.

Definitely was interesting gettin out though. I know I made lots of noise crashing through half frozen puddles on the road to the spot 4x4 is a must!

Great report Cable_Guy, those crappies have saved the day for me more than once wink Were you in the same area as last time? And wasn't that road to the spot fun grin

I was in the general same area. I had found the crappies had moved further down the shoreline to the west. I forgot to mention that unlike that day I met you out there, I didn't seem to have issues catching eyes either! Four of em in 3 hrs. Biggest being 21".

And yes, that road was a blast. About half way out I was wondering what in h-e-double hockey sticks i was thinking/doing. But it was well worth it!

One year ago yesterday I put my dock in on Horseshoe and caught my first cat off the dock in open water.

I don't think Don will be putting the dock in any time real soon, unless he wants to chop almost 3ft of ice away crazy

It's 7 degrees out this morning... Happy first day of spring grin

Any way to get out on the chain with a pick up or is there too much snow? Was hoping to get one last cat trip in.

Yep, you can get out with 4wd and good tires. Cats have been tough to find in any good numbers as of late.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
