Nice!

I actually thought the LX9 might be a little clearer than than, just from what people have told me.

Its definitely a little murky out there in places.

Marcum owes me a commission on Don's purchases. I show him my Vex but recommend the LX-7. Buys it. Show him my Marcum 385 camera. Two weeks later he's got the LX-9. Ok - Marcum. What do you have for me to sell to Don next?

DTro,

I have other videos from the other side of the lake where I can see 10+ feet. The meth hole was very dirty today.

Cool tornado video Don wink

That back bay has always had better water quality than the rest of the lake, problem is, I have never found any huge schools of cats back there. I know there has to be some there, just never got more than a hand full in any one outing.

Just thought I would mention that someone roped off the meth hole recently. It's been a few years since anyone has done this.

Oh and fishing was sloooow today for crappies and cats wink Hope tomorrow is better.

Saw many cats yesterday. Only iced 2. No wallys either. Slow day. Saw someone roped the meth hole last night too.

what do you mean they roped the meth hole?

They put a rope/barrier around it so that someone who doesn't know where it is won't accidentally step in it.

Pretty good day on the lake. Started catching fish before noon and with a little work managed to stay on them for the better part of the day. Got fish on liver, fatheads, minnow heads and even a couple bigger cats by way of a tip-up rigged with live shiners. I think the incoming weather had something to do with the bite being good . I happen to know I wasn't the only one getting good numbers, got to share the ice with a few other folks from here for the evening bite wink

Thanks again for pulling our houses back to the truck, that was much appreciated grin

Oh man Rick, don't think you would have survived fishing with me last Thursday then making a mile long walk to fish panfish. smirk Must be rough getting old, can't pull your own house anymore. grin

Was a great night out there. Got into enough to keep my buddy's 4 year old and my 5 year old busy. It was slow the first 1/2 hour, then we moved onto a school (thanks, Rick for predrilling enough holes out there to jump around a bit and for not minding when we set up over there). After the move, we picked up a few with good action for 1/2 hour, then right at dark they shut their mouths for the most part. Very slow the next 1/2 hour, only picking up a few. Then the next hour was fast and furious. We had to call it a night at 7:30, because the kids were getting tired of it. Biting the best right about 7:30 when we were packing up -- ended the night on a triple in fact. Fresh glow was the ticket. Liver outproduced minnows for us. If you didn't get a fish within 5 minutes, reel up and reglow and you'd get bit within 2-3 minutes. Lots of misses though. I'd say I missed more than I caught last night, for sure. It was like free lunch down there.

Good luck to everyone. Today winter ended for me. I am going into surgery tomorrow at 7:30 am at Fairveiw Southdale to get my knee replaced. Then 2 months later I will do the other knee.

Was out today for my last day on the ice until 10am in the storm for wallys. no action.

See ya next winter. And I will see the cats in the spring off the dock.

Goood luck on your surgeries, Don. Orthopedics is a pretty high-tech science, I'm guessing by the time your two knees are done (and after physical therapy, etc), you're going to feel like a whole new person. Stronger knees than the originals even.

Best of luck to ya! Thanks for the cool video on the last page. It really fired my son up to go up there one more time this year!

I know it has been covered before but I plan on making my first trip out icefishing the chain this weekend after hearing all your guy's reports and was wondering what kind of baits the cats like in the winter? I know chicken liver works well sometimes but do fathead minnows or just plain heads work well similar to walleye fishing? This is something completely new for me so I really don't know much.

I do remember seeing these talked about before but with 18 pages on this years thread alone I figured I'd just ask again. grin

Don, glad to hear everything went good smile

Storm, Minnow heads or liver, it pays to have both with. Live crappie minnows will also get a few fish. Most of the ones I have been getting the last month have come off semi-frozen liver.

Just got back from fishing on the chain not any problems getting around if you have 4 wheel drive just look out for a few drifts. There was a truck at the meth hole tonight so there should be a trail.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
