Lake Vermilion Fishing Reports by Casey's Guide Service (Everything else too)

Recommended Posts

Ha! Ill have crawlers tomorrow afternoon.. Who else needs some? I'm down a fridge for a couple days so I need to get rid of 7-8 tomorrow afternoon.. I've had other days like that mark but always on the west end.. One keeper to day all the rest in the slot and one dink out of about 15 fish.

Here's a tip for you dock hogs...

That's a great idea. Hopefully it can speed things up at the landings.

I'll be giving you a call about crawlers.

Just be careful to not let the boat get out of range of the remote. Water is still pretty cold.

I think as long as the trolling motor has continuous power once your remote transmits the instruction to spot lock the trolling motor holds up its end of the deal unless told to do something else. The GPS is in the motor not the remote obviously. So your boat should stay there while you run to town and get groceries. Great way to tie up multiple boats at a location like a shore lunch dock or something. Sorry the video is sideways!

I tested mine out to 175 yards, probably works much farther than that but it was about as far as I could see (done on dry land in the driveway).

I did the trick that was shown a lot when we rented a houseboat up there a few weeks ago. Made beaching and docking the houseboat a breeze. The guys from the rental place got a kick out of it grin

One peice of advice though, if you leave the dog in the boat make sure to unplug the foot pedal........ I had a rather embarrassing event take place at the Lions Park landing in St. Croix Falls blush

175 yards! Then each remote must be linked to a particular trolling motor via some kind of ID, else things could get interesting on some community spots.

Yes they are programmed to a specific motor.. That's another fun trick to play on your buds but we will cover that some other time! grin

I'm heading out fishing, and by the way...

Worms are in!

Ahh the blessed flat has been delivered grin. Once again, this year, I opted for the "special" flat containing crawlers handled by Casey himself wink. Costs a little more, but last year they proved to be BIG walleye magnets!

Thanks Casey,

MarkB smile

Thanks Mark! We caught quite a few on half a crawler today. Just as good as a leech.

Some from today. 25, a triple on slots 19-21, 24, and a rare but very real NON rusty crayfish.

Fun times fun times.

Crawlers are available at Shamrock, Fortune Bay Marina, and the Y Store.. Be sure to ask for CC's. Crawlers out fished leeches today and I'm sure will only get better in the coming days. Better be sure you bring some out with you in the boat!

Great crawlers again this year Casey! Thank you!

No CC crawlers in the Cook area, but we can get weird Al's worms and they've been producing some nice fish as well.

Boxed up a flat this morning and they were huge. These crawlers take up almost twice as much space in the container as the ones were were getting from our regular supplier

That's good to hear! I have been using them pretty regularly now and they are working well!

  • 2 weeks later...

So I read Marks report and figured I should post one too! We talked on the phone about a couple weeks ago and learned we had been fishing the exact same type of water all year... And we are yet to bump into one another! My report is exactly the same as Marks again!? I guess what I wanted to emphasize for those of you that might get discouraged is there is no secret spot or spots. When you find one fish you potentially find thousands. Maybe not right there but in other locations for similar reasons. Usually it has to do with food! The only differencein our reports is the ways I have been going about fishing. Most of the time it is extremely difficult to put clients in the rocks so I have been doing a lot of bobber fishing.. Usually it's tougher to get the numbers of fish but the quality can be very good! Some days too good if you want to eat fish! The time I spend fishing by myself has usually been pitching jigs around shore, islands, and rock reefs and generally it is very easy to catch a few fish! Today the smallmouth were on a rampage and we caught about 20 of them along with about 10 walleyes and a few perch from about 1:30 to 5:30.. A couple walleyes were 23-24 and one smallie was 20 inches. Forget about your map and your depth finder and just go fish... It's so much easier.

Nice fish Casey! Those pictures are worth the price of admission! I can't think of a fishing method more suited to a kid than watching a bobber even when the kid's aren't defined by age wink. Just to clarify: I do use bobbers, especially when the water is calm and the sun is shining bright. I just "prefer" to bounce the rocks. But hey, it's about catching the buggers and whatever works, works. You're the best Casey, keep up the good work! grin

Good Fishing,

MarkB smile

Kinda new to this forum but I will becoming up the end of July and will be staying up in Black Bay. Was just wondering if there would be any good fishing in that area. Mainly looking for eyes and smallies. Maybe a little help on picking up the right tackle would be great to.
