Lake Vermilion Fishing Reports by Casey's Guide Service (Everything else too)

Recommended Posts

A couple wheeler tracks were heading out to the channel I saw you by with my mud boat... Also a couple wheelers out of mc kinley. I guess I wouldn't drive my wheeler out yet if I owned one or was able, heard one went through up on red and they were reporting up to 11"... Check for yourselves!

I was planning on walking out from McKinley Park, at least until I was confident about ice conditions. I haven't had much luck in the winter in the spot you saw me at with your mud boat.

Just an update.. went back to work Monday, finally! Still not feeling 100% but its very possible I never will. I've fished quite a lot since OCT and its been very refreshing. Most recently I have progressed to ice fishing and hole hopping as part of my extensive rehab, and it has been pretty darn good! Now I wont be able to go until work allows. Sad days. Good news is Ill be booking trips for the season very soon.. Ill keep you posted.

Happy Fishing...

Casey

Mark B where are you hiding?

Casey - glad to hear that you are back close to normal. Was the fishing "pretty darn good", or was it the hole hopping rehab that was good?

Gary, both the fishing and the hole hopping was good, had some slow periods and lots of dead water but also found enough of the opposite. Made it up to Canada a couple of times on day trips as well,, lots of fun!

I've been pretty close to home keeping warm. eek It's nice to know that you're getting back to normal(perhaps your new normal). There will be lots of happy fishermen wanting your services for the upcoming season. It will be good to see you this spring on soft water.

Stay well......

Good Fishing,

Good to hear from you, I am hiding indoors as well today BRRR. A new normal is probably the truth, my leg got crushed pretty bad and my foot bugs me more. I cant wait for open water but in the meantime I'm trolling around the interweb today studying for a possible Lake Winnipeg trip in March!

You in?

I've been dancing around some health issues myself Casey, although not nearly as dreadful as yours. It seems that when I'm not feeding the deer that come for feed everyday, I'm due for another appointment. Those two things are going to keep me occupied until opener I would guess.

Enjoy the early spring adventure, you've certainly waited long enough to get out again.

Good Fishing,

MarkB smile

I know they say don't kill the messenger, but if you see a groundhog in your deer feeder please shoot that rotten bugger! What an ugly couple weeks we have had. Did everyone get signed up to be a boat host for the governors opener? If not, and your interested, email me and I'll point you in the right direction. They are looking for like 50 more I'm thinking.

Lake Vermilion is hosting the 2015 Governer's Opener huh? I didn't know that! That's pretty sweet. Hopefully the lake is unlocked this year come opener! laugh

Just saw the long range forecast for March 2015. Looks to be below normal temps. Here we go again...

I sure hope things thaw a little sooner! I see some warm temps this week and sunshine! All positive things. Looking forward to a Lake Winnipeg trip planned here in a couple weeks... Any one thinking about booking trips for this year, I'm ready. Give me a call or shoot me an email with your dates. Here's to a better 2015!

That is funny TrueNorth, I love those long range forecasts as well. Just got back from the lake yesterday and the snow is melting fast, way ahead of the previous 2 years.

I was out on the water yesterday and it is very sloppy. Lots of slush and standing water up to almost 2 ft deep in spots.. Should be nice for a while after it drains down.

Have snow/slush conditions improved or gotten worse? I've never ice fished vermilion before, and am not necessarily planning on it this weekend, but it's my backup plan. I'm curious to know where the better access points are for panfish and/or tullibee areas?

No water, snow, or slush on the ice.

All of the local landings are still useable as far as I know.

I'm up in Manitoba chasing the queens walleye, haven't been out to the V for a couple days.. The ice changed a lot up here today the holes had water while drilling 1/3 to 1/2 way down and starting to get some heavy shards.. Be careful, pay attention and watch the weather. Snowmobile would be most comfortable transportation now. Tulips should be easy if you find steep breaks to deep water, not the only place but good starting point. Coming home tommorrow, sounds like I need to get up to Rainy River soon. Here's a nice one from today... Good fishin

There were 7 boats fishing by birch dale when I came through, all must have pushed over the shore ice.. Not much water to fish west of there.. Drove through little fork and not much water in town.. It will be interesting to watch the river reports and see how it progresses. Not much run off this year, Vermilion is pretty low already. Snow geese have free range too as the snow line disappeared rapidly. What's a guy to do?!

How much longer do you think we will have safe ice for ATVs on Lake Vermilion?. I'm getting a new ATV next Tuesday, and would like to go out and pursue some crappies.
