Some of the biggest ones I have ever caught was up on Pelican in Brainard when fishing Walleye's on the north end deeper holes. Never seems to be anyone else out there trying for them I was the only one out there last Sat, but I had to cross a break on my sled to get to the spot. But they were big! wink

The bigs one that I have caught may be pushing 20"+... I also noticed that the catch rate for smaller ones to the bigger ones are like 4:1 (from where I was fishing).

But nothing like a 20" tullibee on a panfish rod and 2# line...

500-1000 tulies is between a lot of guys workin as a team. Freeze them then smoke them throughout the year. Give them away to elders who cannot go out and net anymore, they really appreciate it.

As far as summer die off, not likely. Only happens about 1 out of ten summers.

Yes, please pick up garbage so I and other locals don't have to deal with it.

Keith, not all locals are against weekend people, we appreciate their company. Don't put us all locals into your category as not welcoming people.

Good luck this weekend everyone!

Those people taking fish should never be looked down on (as long as you used what you take). Those wasting fish (letting them go bad, tossing them on ice...) should be the one who gets punish by law...

Also, being from the twin cities, all the locals I met on the lake has been helpful and friendly. I enjoy all the conversation as well as tips on where to try.

See we can all get along... grin

Back to the preparation for eating them....Is it pretty much smoking only?.. Are you guys soaking/marinating them in anything? Freezing and smoking them as need be sounds like a good plan.

Haven't caught many on Big Sandy. I think my biggest was around 17" out of Mille Lacs back in the day.

i froze the ones i took home. my buddy has a huge smoker that i hope to fill by the end of the season. i just head em & gut em. split the belly from the front to the anus. make sure you get everything out of the ribcage, including that layer of blood right under the top of the ribcage & that thin lining that lines the ribcage.

i usually prep them in a brine for around 24hrs. i cant remember the exact recipe of the top of my head, but it has salt, brown sugar & maple syrup. then while they're in the smoker i'll glaze em with maple syrup after the first 20mins. mmmmm, now i'm hungry! i'm gonna try my buddy's special rub on some of em this year too. i'll let ya know how that turns out

also, i notice the opposite on size this year. we got a bunch of midgets around 11-14" and i'm freezing the really small ones for bait. usually we struggle to get anything under 15".

Yeah, I have only smoked them. I hear they are not very good fried? Make a brine, there are several recipes online I am sure, try googling it. My recipe I have from my grandpa from several years back. They sit in the brine for 24 hours. then they hit the smoker.

Whats also nice is how fast and easy tullies are to clean.

Good luck this weekend, can't wait to get out there.

X1000!!!!

We were out there out on the lake on Tuesday and the first spot we stopped there had been someone the day before or earlier in the AM who left a bunch of granola bar wrappers. Throughout the afternoon we hit a couple more spots and ended up going where we'd just seen some folks leave 10-15 mins. earlier. When we got there we found a pile of garbage and fish guts! Pop cans, donut box (with one donut albeit), wrappers, and such. They had just gutted the tullies and left the scraps on the ice. The eagles were there from about 2 mins. after they left so had cleaned up a lot of it. These folks had walked from the lot lot/access area on the n/w side of the lake. They walked out and looked to be fishing out of a multi-douche pak shak from what we could tell from a distance. We picked up all the garbage and raced where they had walked into to be sure they weren't still there loading the vehicle or etc. but they were gone......lucky for them or they just might have eaten a donut backwards and had a polish knuckle sandwich for desert!

Come on people, it's pretty simple to pick up garbage!

I hear that baking them is also good as to smoking.. Never tried it yet but will later in the season...

IDK what is with people and trash. If you bring it in, take it with you...

Unreal, you would think as a fisherman, you would respect the water and outdoors. Pick up your trash! My dad would call those people "lazy pigs".

By the way, thanks for picking up after them, at least someone cares!

Class act right there addict.

Chris B the quote that you quoted me by was sarcasim. I was just trying to poiint out that the lake isn't in danger with one fisherman every 25 acres or so.

We got a few that were just under 20 last weekend. I was surprised when I saw that just over 20 is the record. I am sure there are some record breakers in bsl. Seemed like we got the most fish in the a.m. but the last hour of light produced more big ones.

yup, positive. underbite on a whitefish, regular mouth on a tullie. or maybe its vice-versa, but they were all the same. are there whitefish in bsl?

Are you sure the "big ones" you are getting are not White Fish?

according to the 2010 nettings by the DNR there are no whitefish in Big Sandy. they have netted tullies up to 19 inches. good luck.

ok, just read on a different thread that you cant keep tullies to use as bait due to vhs. just a heads up!

I have caught tullies over 20 inches and have caught ones longer then the state record but they did weigh as much. I know because I got them weighed in ely at Skubbs bait shop. That was from the same lake as the record came from. A good friend of mine caught one that was just about 3 inches longer then the state record but weighed 8 oz less. My friend mounted that tullie and they loose scales very easy when skinning them.

i think vhs applies to species, and not the body of water. the lake i fish in has the same species of smelt as Lake Superior, so i cant use these smelt for bait even in the lake i cought them in. good luck.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
