Annandale-Buffalo-Big Lake Ice Reports

Recommended Posts

I was out on a "small" lake this morning and there was between 3" and 4" of ice. Barely enough for me personally and certainly not enough for any kind of vehicle yet. Jigged up a nice pike.

I just checked cedar lake. I drilled holes every 5' to almost the center of the lake. Its 5"-6" everywhere. There was someone who had driven a 4 wheeler out already. If I didn't have to work, my ice season would have offically started today.

Terrible_ Fisherman, have you been on the black pool on clearwater? I can't wait to get out there and find some crappies.

I was one of the portables on Mitchel. I was on 6 inches of good clear ice, but there was a pretty clear line of newer ice that was 2, maybe 3 inches thick. Fishing was terrible. Only had one fish even come and take a look. Time to start looking for another option.

No not in black pool area yet. Just in front of BJs and in the northwest bay. I have heard black pool area can be dangerous so have been avoiding it. Saw some houses on otter this weekend as well.

Heard someone fell through on Schmidt today. This rain is really killing my hopes of fishing next week when I'm home

That would explain all of the rescue vehicles including a wright county sheriff pulling an air boat flying out past Menards. I figured it was someone on Pelican but guess not. Hope the guy is alright.

I saw someone out on Mitchell. Looked like they were in some deep water. Not sure if it was you but I would think the the fish are still shallow.

Thanks for the update on the ice. Hopefull this weather won't eat up too much of the 6".

I will be getting home from school tomorrow night. What do you think the chances are of me finding good ice to do some fishing Thursday and Friday around the Buffalo area?

With the warm temps, I'd say make other plans for the next 2-3 days. Maybe I'm not as brave as some other guys. I'll be waiting at least until Saturday.

I'm starting to think doing some bow hunting this week will be a little safer. I have many more months to ice fish this winter. I'm not gonna risk my life for a crappie

We managed some fish. Definitely picked up later in the day as the sun started to go down. It was tough during the day. Ice is nice, bring spikes if you have them. If the kids like to skate, they could do that too.

Fished a couple different area lakes this weekend and had a good 4.5-5.5 inches throughout. Fishing was also decent, with a few crappies, gills, perch, and a decent eater walleye yesterday. The perch were all small, but did catch a couple decent crappies and sunnies and some nice crappies this evening. The best presentation yesterday for the panfish was orange jig tipped with 1 or 2 euros and today was a pretty even split between a bright green jig and a white a pink jig with a medium size crappie minnows. Most of the crappies were in 7-8 FOW and in 16-18 FOW suspended about a foot off the bottom. Good luck out there, have fun, and be safe!

Where are you buying the Euros?

Anytime I go to a place for bait they never have them.

Cabelas in rogers usually has them

Hey guys, would some one be kind enough to fill me in on the ice thickness of some of the mid-sized lakes in the Annandale area? Lakes I'm curious about are: Cedar, Pleasant, Granite, Francis & John. Any info would be much appreciated!

Feel free to PM me, BuckmasterG Thanks!

I have been on francis the last few days and there is 8" of ice. But I have pulled out 2 fish houses from the lake the last 2 days. The ice cracks pretty bad when you go over it or walk around. The fishing has been pretty slow for me.

Thanks for the response JollyJoker, surprising that you would be hearing it crack that from walking with having 8". It wasn't just the sound of making ice was it?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
