"]Parise is in orono, its no secret. I've also heard he's not real hot about playing here. Id have to bo him. Is parise a game changer? I honestly havnt seen him play in a long time. There is still better and cheaper guys out there. It will be fun to see how it shakes out. Also sounds like jersey wants to hang on to him

I think Parise would fit our team pretty good though. Koivu is not a #1 center. If we inserted Parise to #1 center and Koivu down to #2 center it would open up Koivu offensively.

But I also not betting on that we will get him either. There are some other teams that will want him too and can afford to pay him.

I hope we can add a d-man and a number one center. I haven't looked at who will be available free agency wise but maybe we will have to trade some assets (not necessarily prospects) maybe backstrom to get the guys we need?

I heard that too about Gilbert. I definitely agree about Schultz. As much as people go on about how dependable he was, he sure wasn't this year. It looked like he lost a step and started taking more penalties because of it.

BTW, the NJ-NY game last night, Zids was on the ice for the empty netter allowed. He couldn't keep the puck in the offensive zone, lost a step on the guy, and took a penalty. That sounds exactly like this season's games here. The guy is done. He should just retire and go live out the rest of his days fabulously wealthy, doing whatever he wants. He was good in his prime, but not now.

Well the Kings just own us this year. Mikko out another two weeks, put a fork in us we are done. Give the young guys the reigns and lets see how low we can draft.

Whoever we get in FA, no matter what position, we need someone that can PUT THE PUCK IN THE NET!! ive never seen a franchise have so much trouble scoring and it gets OLD to watch to say the least.

Hopefully Granlund can help out with that next year also.

We thought we were getting that in Heatley and Seto. We got scoring in Heater, Seto's been ok, but we need to get rid of the mentality that we are going to score highlight reel goals. Sit in front of the net, when someone shoots, try to deflect it. When the goalie stops it, try to shove it in. When the D tries to clear you, destroy them. When they've done these things this year they have a very good record. When they don't, we get what we saw last night.

Our defense' age showed last night too. Hopefully they grow a lot by next year.

I just hope this mid to late season tail spin we are in doesn't scare off those big time UFA that we need. From what I see we have tons of potential and talent in the system + a ton of cap room. A few big signings could turn this franchise around, well that an some nice development on the D side of things from a few of the young guys. We have been very much ravaged by injuries this year, hopefully some top end guys can see that and give us a chance.

Koivu/PMB/GL have missed 98 out of a possible 189 games to this point. You could pretty much say that is the equivalent of one line missing half the season up until now. No team would be doing well with those numbers. Land a big name and a middle tier free agent and this team should be fine at scoring. Not sure if any of the other young guns will play too much next year.

I agree with Bear on the D however. I thought the second and third goals by the King last night were horrible defensive plays.

Tonight we play a team that has dominated us, which could be a good thing. We sit in 10th overall right now. I think we can get a better pick than that smile

Imagine getting between a #3 and #6 pick this summer. Could be nice to draft a high scoring winger.

Oh yeah, and Charlie Coyle signed an entry level contract. He's played 16 QMJHL games and in that time has 12G and 12A. Yeah, he's good. grin

It may be taboo to say this on here, but im gonna anyway- I think Koivu is soft. The guy seems to get injured every year, sometimes multiple instances..... Its beginning to look like hes a little overpaid too. Good two way player but he doesnt score NEAR as much as he should for the $. To me hes just another soft euro who wont suck it up and play through nagging injuries.

Nothing wrong with having an opinion. No taboos here beside the ones the forum admins setup and I don't think there was anything on Koivu in there smile

I disagree. In a recent interview, Fletcher said that Koivu had re-aggravated his previous injury by trying to play through it. Yeo&Fletch finally had to sit him (according to Fletch). Yeah, he doesn't score a ton, but look at the Wild record with vs without him. Overpaid, maybe, but you need to pay franchise players. Koivu is this franchise' guy. He's not a goal scorer like our last guy. He's a setup-two way center and leader.

Wild game is starting to get a little physical, BTW. It's taken about 10 minutes to get through 1 minute of play cause all the scrums.

I have never thought of Koivu as soft but these injures are getting a little old.

I better go to the eye dr, did Matt Kaissian really score two goals tonight? Put him on the first line! Nice come back tonight, too bad we couldn't turn it into two. Or maybe its ok if we are tanking for the draft again.

I say tank the season since GL and PMB are done and get a higher draft pick.

That was one thing I used to hate about Lemaire and "da system". The Wild would never finish bad enough to get a really good pick.

The whole team is soft. Or injury prone, whatever you want to call it, it cost them the playoffs this year.

One of the worst teams in the NHL made us look pretty bad last night and we stole a point but lost a goalie on a weak play. Now for some stats. We are last in shots, last in shots against, Our leading scorer is 66th in the leauge (Heatley) and our second leading scorer isn't even on the map. Brodziak who they just gave a nice contract to is -13! It shouldn't be too tough to tank fo the draft but they will probably win a few to screw it up.

We've been good at that the past couple years. Especially two years ago. If we didn't win our last two games, we would be talking about Jeff Skinner right now.

I say tank it. Yeah, it sucks to watch them lose, but it will be better next year...I hope.

I hope Backstroms injury isn't too serious but I would be cool if he was out for a while, I'd like to see Hackett get a few starts.

Looks like we'll be seeing more of Hackett this season.

The Wild is such a joke this year. If I didn't have great seats I would probably give up my season tickets! I heard that they are going to set an NHL record this year though. I haven't confirmed this myself, but I heard that they will be the first team in NHL history to be in first place OVERALL in the NHL at Christmas to not make the playoffs. I think they will get the third overall draft pick this year. Why is it that MN is the place where goal scorers go to die? We all used to blame it on Lemaire. Now who do we blame it on???

I don't think we'll be as fortunate as to get the 3rd pick grin Scorers? We need to shoot first. Seto would have sooooo many goals if we would just shoot the puck for him. He's gotten quite a few from near the paint. I don't know what it is. We just won't shoot. Maybe the practices emphasize too many set plays. I don't know.

The wild have never been able to score since they became a franchise. Have they ever in their history ranked in the top half of the league in goals? Just in the top HALF? I guess the old cliche "defense wins championships" usually holds true, but COME ON... SOMEONE put the puck in the net!!!!!!!!! thats the object right?

The wild were getting very lucky in the begining of the year. We had a decent team with everyone healthy. Now with our core players hurt we are terrible. We have no depth to allow for injuries. I'm guessing the coaching staff and cf are not surprised how bad we are.

Yes they have to start putting the puck at the net in order to score goals. A cheap goal is just as good as a designed play goal!

Hard to rebuild quickly in the NHL when you are drafting kids that are 18 and under. It takes most of them a couple years to make it up to the big leagues.

In 2 years I will bet they are a top 10 scoring team. It looks like the current regime is making pretty good decisions (except on the Leddy/Barker trade).

I think you nailed, we were pulling wins out of thin air at the beginning of the year. Not to mention Backs and Harding were playing out of their minds. It was fun but not something you can do consistantly. We had all kinds of ???'s coming into the year. We just aren't good enough yet and any hope we had was squashed by massive injuries. It's been a tough year but dispite the results I feel we are heading in the right directions, it might not look like it now but I like our future.

This article gets me excited for the next couple years. Grandlund, Brodin, Zucker, Hackett the other guys and hopefully a good pick after this year, $20 in cap space for 2013 and 2014, sign a big name on offense and a big name on defense and we'll have a good mix of quality rookies, solid middle of the road players and 2-3 all stars and the best enforcer in the NHL, we are so close!

Michael Russo's Sunday Insider: Projects near complete

Article by: MICHAEL RUSSO , Star Tribune Updated: March 4, 2012 - 1:12 AM

The NHL draft classes of 2010 and '11 boast talent that could supplement the Wild's thin depth as soon as next season.

Swede Johan Larsson is among the top Wild prospects who could find themselves in St. Paul, or Houston, next season.

There's something to be said for prospects growing together. That's what Anaheim did when Bryan Murray was general manager and Chuck Fletcher, the Wild's now-GM, was his right-hand man.

In 2005-06, Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf and Dustin Penner were thrust jointly into the NHL, and several less-heralded guys began their careers together as well. The Ducks wound up soaring all the way to the conference finals. One year later, they won the Stanley Cup.

That's the grand plan in Minnesota as well.

Next year, the expectation is that six forwards -- 2010 first-rounders Mikael Granlund and Charlie Coyle, 2010 second-rounders Brett Bulmer, Johan Larsson and Jason Zucker and 2011 first-rounder Zack Phillips -- and potentially one defenseman -- 2011 first-rounder Jonas Brodin -- will turn pro together.

"The chemistry that's formed and the trust that's built is really neat," Fletcher said. "Not only do they become buddies, but they push each other and become better players because of that competition and that chemistry and those relationships."

This summer's development camp and next September's training camp (assuming a collective bargaining agreement is ratified by then) will be exciting.

Not every player will make the Wild out of camp. But the expectation is two or three could earn roster spots immediately.

Granlund, who has played three years professionally in Finland, has won a league title and a world championship, is a lock. But could Coyle, a huge body who is dominating the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League since leaving Boston University two months ago, be ready? How about Larsson, Team Sweden's captain during its run to a world junior championship in January? Or Brodin, the all-world skater who thrived on the NHL-sized rink during world juniors?

It's early, obviously, but it certainly appears as if Wild assistant GM Brent Flahr and his scouting staff hit several home runs the past two drafts.

The upcoming Hockey News' Future Watch ranks five Wild prospects in its top-40, including Granlund at No. 2 (Washington's Evgeny Kuznetsov is No. 1), Brodin at No. 12 and Coyle at No. 14

What's exciting about next season is whether these players are in Minnesota or Houston, the Wild should finally have depth to be able to survive the loss of top players.

The Wild looks like it's heading for a fourth consecutive missed postseason. The No. 1 team in the NHL as of mid-December, the Wild began to derail when it lost top-liners Mikko Koivu, Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Guillaume Latendresse during a 24-hour stretch Dec. 13-14.

Koivu will miss his 20th game-and-counting Sunday when the Wild hosts Colorado. Bouchard will miss his 24th consecutive game and 28th of the season. Latendresse has missed 47 of the past 49 games.

Early in the season, the Wild was able to overcome injuries to defensemen, goalies and bottom-six forwards. It even withstood the loss of Latendresse for 15 games from Nov. 12-Dec. 10. But three at the same time proved too many.

Because there were no adequate top-six fill-ins from Houston, players like Matt Cullen, Kyle Brodziak, Cal Clutterbuck, Darroll Powe and Nick Johnson "got stretched out of positions they were better served in. We got away from our game and have had trouble getting it back," coach Mike Yeo said.

But Fletcher said, "The one great thing about next year with all these young players coming into the system, whether they're in the NHL or they start the year in Houston, we should have a lot more offensive talent and a lot more depth available to us.

"Some may have to go to Houston before they're ready to contribute, but even if they have inconsistencies in their game, they may be able to come up and give you a stretch of games at a high level."

Whether that translates to immediate dividends next season, who knows? But the goal is to build a long-term winner in Minnesota by growing these kids together.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
