About that weather, would you set up in the woods close to where they're roosting? or would you set up on a field edge, where they have been going to the last couple mornings? This is the first year hunting them for me and I'm not too sure where to go when the weather is going to be like what they're calling for.

thanks for the help.

With the weather forcast I would stick to the woods 150 yards or closer to the roost.

Lonnnnng day today. Spent all day in the woods, got 6 gobblers to respond but when we chased after them they just shut up and walked away with hens. Found a good roosting area so will go there again for our last morning hunt before coming home tomorrow and hopefully I can fill my tag.

Yah! Me too! grin

The truck and camper are packed and ready to go. I'm leaving after work tomorrow. It's been a while since I've planned 4 days of hunting turkeys in MN. Hope I don't need them all and can get some trout fishing in.

Why is it so dang hard to get to sleep? And I have to get up at 3 for crying out loud.

Yeah, it's always good... smile

Area 348. Pretty much all the seasons so far have had miserable turkey weather for the most part with just 1 or 2 nice days in the mix. It looks like season D will be no exception.

I am looking forward to trying to score with my bow. I updated my dekes this year to a bobble head hen and a KillerB tom from Primos. It should be interesting. grin

Awesome! Once you take one with the bow, it'll be tough toting around the shotgun after that. Good luck!

Getting ready to leave tonight some time for 349D. Looks like rain all day Saturday, and windy through Sunday... Not good. At least Sunday should be rain free and Monday looks decent so far. My dad is down there now, left his phone in the car. I am going to pick up a couple blinds from his house so we all have one to stay dry in during the rain rather than sitting in camp doing nothing. Will probably just set them up on some of the main ridges we usually hunt and see what happens. That reminds me, I better pack the gameboy, I get bored just sitting like that...

well couple close calls this morning... had a hot one gobbling and strutting and hissing back and forth for about an hour, but he hung up 75 yards down the ridge and refused to come any closer. gobbled every time we purred and scratched leaves, yelped, anything.

finally busted out cutting, and even a gobble call, still didn't want to come in

then my buddy missed his 2nd bird of the season right after we settled into a new spot, walked right thru a field past us, he shot and it flew to the other side of the valley just about.

Good Lord, I don't know if I'll ever have the patience to take a tom with my bow in the spring! After getting the cold shoulder to my blind/deke set up on Friday morning I opted for the boom stick to go get one. I love stalking game as it is and when you have a few hundred acres to play on it's kinda tough to sit and wait it out with only a small window of good weather.

If there's one "challenging" thing I did it was to strike out with only the shotgun. No calls, no dekes, no blind, just me and my voice for calling. After a short move to where the birds were I was able to convince a pair of toms to come check me out on the hillside and lets just say, Ppfftt-doom BOOM is exactly what happened.

I'll get the pics and some more story posted tomorrow probably. My bird weighed 24.69lbs with a 9 1/4 inch beard and twin 7/8ths inch spurs. Not a giant like my avatar bird but I'm plenty happy with him and this season will not be forgotten in the mix of memories of seasons past.

Glad to hear you other guys are hitting it. Go team!

Way to go Wanderer.

That is a heavy bird.

Looking forward to the full story & pics.

I have my Minnesota E season this week and then my first Wisconsin hunt next week.

Hopefully I can put a Tom on the ground.

Yeeaahhh! Good luck out there. Those birds are still doing their thing but just being more quiet about it.

So, what's up Musky? No news from your last day out?

We're sitting on a jake from Sorgy, a tom from Cheetah, a tom from me, and another hunt to come for Cheetah, two for Hugonian, and a continuing saga for GoblueM. Not too shabby. cool

Sorry guys struck out on my last day out. I couldn't set up close to the roost since it was on pirvate land. It sure was nice to get out though. My sister has a tag for May 13th season so I'll be out there trying to get her a bird (the first time hunting turkeys for her also). Good job team on getting those birds, I think that i'm going to get a tag for this fall, so I can shoot one while I'm bow hunting. Almost every night out last fall, I'd have 15-20 come by me within 15 yards.

Skunked in MN here. Terrible conditions for us. Rain on Saturday, wind on Sunday and we finally had a decent morning today but the birds had moved on to other places or just didn't want to talk. Saw very few birds in general, it has been worse and worse every year in the area we hunt. Going to consider some new ground in MN going forward.

Well it didn't happen this morning.

Could only hunt until 10:30 and then had to get to work.

Saw several hens and had 1 Tom gobbling very close in the woods but never saw him.

Can't hunt tomorrow but will be out Friday & Saturday.

Glad to hear that construction is starting, thanks for the updates!   Would be cool to get a periodic picture or two of the construction over time for those who happen to swing through Cook and stop by. Appreciate the info.

Ice on the majority of lakes on the Iron Rage excluding big water and the mine pits.  I did see someone out today in a hub shelter on a smaller lake.  I'm shooting for a Red Lake trip Sunday if not I'll be fishing smaller waters around Grand Rapids
    • Wanderer
Its icing up pretty good from LF to Fort already.  Big change overnight last night.
    • monstermoose78
Yes someone went through on skogman
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...  Most open water anglers put away the boats and are looking forward to ice fishing.  Ice forming on back bays and on different parts of the big lake.  With the cold snap, things are coming along nicely.  When the time is right, resorts will communicate when initial ice accesses will be available.  That time is not yet, but it won't be too long!  On the Rainy River...   A few anglers out braving the elements with good success, but for the most part, anglers have boats put away for the year.  Some anglers fished last week with decent success and some big walleyes.  With increased current this fall, river ice will be suspect.  Back bays iced up. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice is forming throughout the Angle.  Some reports around the inlet of 3 inches of ice, but no ice travel is recommended.  Most bays and some areas throughout islands iced up.  NW Angle resorts will communicate when ice fishing begins.

      Just saw the report

Heard a rumor that someone went through the ice on Skogman.  Anyone know for sure?
    • Coleman
Cripes, I better get the boat out one last time this week.  Although I'm sure the river will be open for a few more weeks.

That's ok.  Now that your here may be you can post something more current!  Welcome.  😉
