The LX--5 gives you a dual beam transducer, and movable zoom through the water column. You also get more power and the super fine line option, and more levels of interference rejection. If the extra $200 isn't a deal breaker then the added features on the -5 are really nice ---- but if the $200 is too much, then the VX--1P is a great option and comes with bottom zoom. Hope that helps.

The extra target separation is nice. I never really gave it much thought until I was fishing with my LX-5 next to my wife who was using my old VX-1. We were on a school of crappies and I could see each individual mark, while they just showed up as one big blob on the VX-1. Not to take anything away from the VX-1, it really is a nice entry level unit.
