I was out last night and my heater stopped working. The pilot light would light but the burner wouldn't light. Is this because of the cold temps? I use a quick connect hose and 20lb tank

I dont have a big buddy heater but my regular one did the same thing a few years ago i found out that the thermo coupler had been bent away from the pilot light. i bent it back into the flame, and now works great. Hope this helps in someway.

Excellent answer caseih. That's what I was thinking myself.

If the thermo couple isn't getting full time flame to it, it will shut down the propane.

Wind can cause it, or it could just be bent.

Minus all the jib jab on the picture, that end (left side) needs to stay hot.

Wind will make mine do that, you have to seal off as much of the portable as possible.Mine was doing that on a really windy nite, brought it home&it ran all night in the garage.Sometimes i get a little crud in the fuel line,a shot of air

in the tip seems to clean it out.I also put on the fuel filter,as i have heard this helps if you run off a 20 pounder.Mine never acts up in my perm, just the portable.WIND. Good luck.

if your using a hose and a large tank and don't have a in line filter the regulator will plug up I have experienced this for my self

I don't believe you need a filter with the quick connect hose. Just the regular hoses. Not 100% sure on that but pretty sure I read about this last year. May want to post this in the Equipment Expert forum for much better and more knowledgeable results.

The quick connect hose which is made for the big buddy does not require a filter. The quick connect hose has a plastic tube inside the rubber hose to carry the fuel at a reduced pressure.

Standard gas lines break down and tend to plug the small orifices in the heater that is why they require a filter.

I had the local Gas company shorten my quick connect hose and once you see how it is designed it all makes sense. I would not risk using a standard hose and filter. 2c

Take a look at your pilot light the flame should be bright blue, long and strong if it has much orange color and is weak and blows away from the pilot under the slightest breeze you need to clean the lines.

A better way to describe it would be if it resembles the flame from a Bic lighter it is probably not good. If it 'MORE' resembles the flame coming out of a hand held propane torch the pilot is ok. Hope this makes sense.

I took the heater apart and cleaned it. The flame is back to a nice blue color and working good. The only issue is that i can't get the control knob back on like it was. I think i stripped it some when trying to get it back on.

it could have been a co2 sensor if yours has that. some models have one and shuts off if it senses too much co2 in your ice house.

Glad to hear it. Once they get the least bit dirty the pilot seems to fade and that is when you start having problems with them blowing out easy, shutting off randomly, etc.
