As a Graduate of Mounds View HS and Northwestern College on Snelling Ave, I have fished Valentine many of years. There are walleyes in this lake, you just have to fight to get them. I do not mean to disrespect you but have you been by Valentine recently? Every weekend there are 5 to 10 people out there. I remember when people tried to drive down the hill across from Valentine Park to get onto this lake. I like to fish Island, Snail, Turtle and Long Lake in New Brighton but every once in awhile I still goto Valentine. I noticed that I am the Third Person to talk about this so let the fishermen/women decide. Pressure happens at every lake, it is the importance of Catch and Release is what we need to point out.

Love all the information on this site. That is why I decided to join.

I understand what you are saying WallyGator12000 about that you never saw a walleye while going to Bethel. The fish were never biting at Johanna when I went to Northwestern. The same was true for my friends that went to St. John's, the fish were never biting at SAG. However, it is not our school lakes. I can understand how Bethel students could say how the lake is not good for fishing because it is kind of nice to keep the public off "their" lake. The public just has to respect the rules of the DNR and keep the lake clean and just keep what you need. This lake gets no pressure during the summer because the only access is the dock at Bethel with canoes. The pressure of winter fishing will not be the same as the pressure at Johanna were people fish year round. When you fish Valentine, Good Luck and be a true sportsman.

Funny, I'm a MVHS grad as well, and lived in Shoreview my whole life. I never said the fish weren't biting on Valentine, I gave the most honest assessment of the lake that has been provided in this entire thread, it's a northern and panfish lake, that's it. It's not a walleye lake, and there is no way you can send someone who is looking for walleyes to go fish Valentine. It would be an incredible waste of time. I stand by what I said, I have never ever seen a walleye out of that lake, and I have literally fished it my whole life. Are there less than a dozen in there? Sure, I believe that. Is it worth fishing for walleye? No way.

Like I also said before, I'm a Bethel grad, not at the school anymore, so I'm not trying to protect "my" lake. I totally agree that the public needs to respect the law, but that isn't the point of my post either. My main point is that Valentine isn't a walleye lake, plain and simple. My next point is there is no way on earth that you should post about a lake that is 59 acres in size on an internet forum. 1600 people (and counting) have read this thread, and if even a tenth of them decide Valentine is worth their time, the lake is dead. I love this site, and the information that is shared here is great, but never should a lake this small be hyped online, especially when the hype isn't real.

Well said. I've seen multiple sub-100 acre lakes overrun in the past 5-10 years when they're being discussed on this forum. Information is meant to be shared - but those who share it have a responsibility to think about just what they're sharing.

Yeah 59 acres is tiny! That could get really screwed up in one season of fishing from someone posting things about it.

I recall, somewhere you can order online or tele Red Lake Walleyes by the pound shipped to you filleted and all! Depending on price, might break even compared to a road trip there

""""Protect your small lakes from over fishing by keeping them to yourself. If you dont, they will be fished out by next weekend.""""

Might not be a bad idea to practice catch and release as well for the same reasoning...

I generally practice C&R on most metro lakes.

My panfish lake has been producing over 100+ keepers for the 3 of us each time out. In several outings we have only kept a total of 2 limits, thats 40 fish. We've caught hundreds of eating sized (8"+) sunnies out there.

With this abundance combined with the fact almost know one fishes it, I have no issues keeping the occassional meal from this spot.

surprising as it sounds, try lake o'dowd in shakopee. i live on the lake and was just out last weekend. Had some success out in front of the fishing pier towards the rope swing in about 18-20 ft of water. Caught around 7 eyes with two being right at 18 inches. the other five were just little 7 to 10 inchers. anyone decides to go out this week let me know. may head back out there again this weekend

Haha yeah O'Dowd will see some new pressure. Isn't that kinda sad? People hear of walleyes being caught near the metro and flood the lake and keep dam near everything they catch. I respect a lot of members on here and know that most people mean well but there are so many people who lurk on this website and just look for someone to give up a spot.

Can somebody post the coordinates for the access at O'Dowd? I'd like to take a few of my buddies and their buddies out there this weekend and probably next. FISH FRY!!!

Thanks in advance!

I know I sound like a crabby b*st*rd. Yet this is my point exactly. Tons of people lurking on here. A decent fun lake for a lot of people will suddenly 100X more pressure then it otherwise would have if people had kept quiet.

There will be tons of idiots out there this weekend fishing on top of each others. Everyone will be looking for that easy fish fry. Some will get a a dinner or two. Then this lake wont be worth fishing for years to come.

This is a relatively small lake that can't handle the pressure a website like this generates over night. How many people have lurked thru this thread waiting for a bit like that? Maybe 1000+? More?

Keep your mouth shut and find your own spots.

Now long long before ban me? grin

Waleyes are in tons of lakes, all someone has to do is look at a stocking report or a gill net catch. You still have to know how to catch them. I know waleyes are in Waconia, but I still only catch probly two a year there. I think if someone wants to catch waleyes they should go out and try, for me thats half the fun. Tips always hep, but I dont need exact locations.

See O'Dowd will be packed the rest of the of season now.

Isn't it already packed, kind of like every metro lake that contains a viable population of walleyes?

It is what it is. There's about 3 million people in the 7-county metro, and not a lot of lakes (comparatively) that are worth targeting for walleyes. Want your own slice of heaven? Move to Ely! Oh shoot, now the Ely lakes are going to be crowded!

I couldn't agree more - metro eyes are not easy to catch, as you basically have to be fishing a 'spot on a spot' to do well... At the same time however, it completely baffles me as to why anybody would tell others about their 'hot spots' on an online forum... low IQ's maybe?

I doubt that, I would guess that some people just don't know the magnitude of what could happen by giving out a hot spot or hot lake (of smaller size) over the internet. There are hundreds of people who lurk this forum for just that - a spot or a tip. Not to mention that something about Metro Walleye's and people lose their dam minds! If someone see's or here's of someone catching a walleye in a spot, they butt up right next to it or sit on it the next day. I don't even bother targeting them in the metro because it's just not worth it to me (I did get lucky and catch a 7 pounder this winter while not targeting them), there are some nice ones in the metro lakes but they are not easy to find and you can bet most of the walleyes people catch around here get taken for the pan. I've released every walleye I've ever caught in the metro because in my mind their not that common in the lakes I fish but I know I'm the minority on that. If I wanna catch some eye's I'll make the drive an hour north and have much better luck.

I don't want to sound like a complete a-hole, but there is no way around it, so here goes. To everyone who is bitc**ing and whining about people sharing information- you need to get over it. Lakes in the metro are going to be busy. Get used to it. If "your" spot gets busy you have 2 options, 1. deal with it, and 2. go find a new spot. We live in a time where info can not be kept secret, whether its from an internet forum, baitshops, text messages, etc etc etc. word is going to get out if you are catching fish and yeah it will get busy, but like i said before, you have 2 options.

And for the people that just sit and read the forums looking for the "magic spot" , how do you get any satisfaction out of going where everyone else is fishing? Do some work and find a spot on your own.

and a general thought for everone...show some restraint and let some fish go. The people who keep a limit(or more) everytime they hit the ice are the ones putting the most pressure on the fishery. Why would you possibly need that much fish?

Sorry for the rant, but I had to get it out. thanks wink
