questions about winter camping / fishing - looking for fishing guide

Recommended Posts

Hi, Was planning on going with a few friends winter camping and fishing on kab, I assume camping on the lake is OK, I know fish houses must be off at night but what if your camping in it I assume it's Ok to stay in it overnight, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also if anyone knows of a good fishing guide that we could hire to put us on the fish?

Thanks, Roulo

If you keep it on the Lake and yopu are not in it you need a license. If your in it you dont. At least thats my understanding.

Thanks for the reply. I thought I read somewhere that Voyageurs said fish houses had to be removed at night (no perms). But I was talking to a summer time guide up there and he said there were perms set up so I guess I'll have to call the rangers to clarify, or maybe I should'nt smile

Roulo,

No problem with camping overnight here in Voyageur's. If you leave the shack unattended, it must have a license. If you are staying in it no license.

I have a perm on Kab and there are others as well. Get up here and enjoy the great country,

Roulo,

In the winter you can camp about anywhere land or water as long as you aren't on a trail. If you are out on the lake surface it would be a good idea to have some reflective material somewhere so a snomobile doesn't run into you camp at night. That would be a heck of a way to wake up.

how heavy is the sled traffic? Is there a road going all the way to the landing at ash river or do you have to sled far to get there? Ever fish the near the brule narrows north of Kab in the winter. it seems like it would be a mint spot. I know the sled maps show thin ice there but was thinking it might be able to sled so far then walk. I know theres serious current there - been there in the summertime a long time ago. Roulo

Roulo,

You can drive right to the Ash River Visitor Center. Head out from there. Many areas to fish right close there. The idea of going from Ash River to the Brule narrows probably isn't a very good option. It's a long way to go with lots of areas of slush. The snowmobile trails to that area are not staked and the trail to Kettle Falls is not open and staked. Also, a very dangerous area with current.

Fish the Ash River area and you will be fine.

Thanks much Kab, I was checking out that ice road deal on rainy from the park service - that sounds like a cool thing and would put me only 4 mi from the brule narrows. I guess it's not open yet but should be soon with this last cold snap.
