Navionics app for Iphone

Hoffer

Question

So, i downloaded the navionics app for iphone today while out fishing on Tonka. Its very cool - and so far I like it alot.

So, heres a very naieve question. I really dont know how these things work - obviously it must be working off my GPS on the Iphone - but does it also rely on my Cell signal to work as well?

In otherwords, if I head to Canada this Summer and am out of cell signal - will this navionic maps app still work? Would it be just like having a "H20" GPS unit or similar??

Or do you need the cell signal for this to all work as well.

Thanks for any input on this!!

Not familiar with iPhones that much, but with other brands the GPS and cell are completely separate, and no cell service is required, I would suspect the iPhone is similar, but who knows what Steve jobs had up his rear when designing the thing.

Q. Do I need to have cellular coverage to use the GPS function?

A. With the iPhone 3G, location technology is built into the device. Your approximate location is determined using available information from cellular network data, local Wi-Fi networks (if you have Wi-Fi turned on), and GPS (if you have an iPhone 3G; GPS not available in all locations). Once you have downloaded Navionics Mobile applications to your iPhone, they are resident on your device and are a reliable tool to access charts even when not in cell range. Please note that earlier versions of the iPhone are not guaranteed to work with Navionics Mobile.

DTRO-

Thanks!

I have the most current Iphone.

I really just want to know if I will need a cell signal - and if so - does it have to be a 3G signal - or just regular to work this thing?

when I take my iphone to canada - I lose all service about 10 miles North of the border.

If I take the iphone this summer to canada - and just want to use it for the maps - will this work?

Thanks!

Hoffer

Dude. Re-read the FAQ entry that Dtro posted. It cannot possibly answer your question any clearer.

You don't need any signal, 3G or otherwise.

OK...cool!

Sorry! when reading that the first time I still wasnt catching that part - I should have read it closer!

So, in reality - the Iphone with this App really becomes a "GPS unit" like a h20 or whatever?

I guess it all suprised me. For one thing I figured there must be some kind of limitation??? - considering the Navionics chip for a H20 sells for so much more than just 15.00 for this app.

I still think there must be something I am missing that the "real" GPS units can do compared to this Iphone app?

yeah its unreal!!

I dont know if you have the Iphone or not - but the screen quality is so good and you can pinch in and out and its so easy!

I am trying to figure out how to put a "pin point" in to mark an area that I want to put into favorites.

I did tap the screen where i wanted it - and it came up with options - and i entered it in - but the symbol is a "house" not a Pin point.

I guess it doesnt matter. Just wondering how you get a pin point. I am going to have to fool around with this alot!

I did go to my favorite lake where I know there is a little sunken island and it didnt shoe up on it - but everything else was right on - and this sunken island is pretty small - like only 30 feet by 30 feet in the middle - so maybe it didnt get mapped?

anyway - its a very cool app!!

No I have the Android version. When i save a push pin (favorite) i just hit a spot and the balloon pops up, hit that and select "Add to Favorites"

OK - I just was able to add in a pin point on my location (current location right on the GPS).

what i also wanted to do is add in a spot on a lake 200 miles away - so all I had to do was go to favorties and tap that and the lake would come up without having to manually scroll to it.

Thats when the house symbol came up - and not the pin point - but thats fine.

I think there was also a thread on ice fishing that talked about these little fish symbols that are showing up. I found a few on one of the maps - and then opened them up - and its fun to see what they read. I wonder how much of that is the truth and how mush is [PoorWordUsage]?? In nay case - its alot fo fun smile

One other quick question.

I went to one of my canadien lakes i fish. The depths and contours were showing but only around the shoreline to a ways out. The "middle" was just white with no depths/contours etc..

Do I need to change a setting? or is this just an instance where that part hasnt been mapped?

Not sure about your ? but it might not be charted or it might not be on the download. There are a lot of lake in Canada crazy

I found this a thought it described in detail how the GPS works on the Iphone:

The iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4 use A-GPS -- or "Assisted GPS" -- which in basic terms accesses an intermediary server when it is not possible to connect directly via satellite -- indoors, for example -- and this server provides the nearest satellite with additional information to make it possible to more accurately determine a users position.

Apple explains that the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4 also use "wi-fi hotspots and cellular towers to get the most accurate location fast" when GPS is not the most convenient method of location detection. The iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 also have an integrated digital compass to also provide the direction one is facing, which is quite useful when combined with mapping software.

When combined with a service -- such as AT&T Navigator which "transforms your iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 into a voice-guided GPS navigation system for traveling across the country and just across town" for an additional monthly charge -- theses iPhone models are capable of providing real-time navigation. The original iPhone is not.

Yes, some lakes are not entirely mapped, however I've had issues with the overlays they use (satellite and google maps) in conjuction with the contours. I would turn off the overlays and just browse around a bit, sometimes the screen has to refresh.

To delete a favorite, simply select it (or search for it and select it) then select delete.
