When and how did it become illegal, to have permanent deer stands on Federal land?

It is reserving it. Is that a bad thing? If you wait untill opening morning to put up your stand, there could be several hunters in a small area, with nowhere else scouted for deer. When I see a permanent stand, I know to scout another area for opening. Permanent stands are safer for oldtimers also.

Ha, yea its a good thing to reserve public land then people start stealing stands more often, have heard in parts of the country people cutting straps on stands because it was "there spot" then you get the finger pointing i was hear first so its my spot give me a break its public land no one should be able to reserve it. Permanent stands are not safer its wood and nails sitting out all year long getting beat on by the weather

+1. i know of several public land areas that are perceived to "belong" to certain folks because they have "reserved" it with stands. lots of stand stealing and heated confrontations going on

IMO,Yes. Public land is just that public land. No one should be able to "reserve" any of it and prevent anyone in any way from accessing it.

You don't have to wait untill opening morning to put a stand up on all public land.

How long before season, can you start reserving your area? I'm hunting the same area that my wife's Grandfather used to hunt before W.W. two. We aren't the only ones in the woods, but with permanent stands, others who scout the area, will know other hunters will be in these woods also. Let's share the woods knowingly. Deer hunting is my greatest pleasure, after family, and to have another hunter cutting me off on opening morning, isn't very enjoyable. HAVE FUN AND BESAFE

Agreed - on both accounts. Not only that, they're eyesores.

I would have to agree. I always hate seeing old, rotten deer stands still standing. Kinda a pet peeve of mine I guess.

Last year the DNR was removing stands by our cabin while I was up grouse hunting in Oct. They asked me if I hunted out here, or knew of any more. I told them about four stands (of which belong to 4 guys that I know), just because I knew it was the law. This was tough for me, part of me wanted to protect the people that built the stands, but in the end I had to follow the law, and do whats right. Come deer season those guys didn't have a stand. Man were they ticked when I fessed up that I told the CO's where they were...whats a guy supposed to do? I was always taught to tell the truth, so I did.

I can understand why it's not lawful to build a permanent structure on public land. There were great stories and memories made on public land, that's for sure! But, the days where you will hunt the same land as your g-pa on public land are coming to a screeching halt, if not over.

It's the reason I bought private land, if I could go put up a permanant on public land why would I continue to pay off a quarter mill? There are awesome public spots for sure, you must do much homework to get lucky enough to locate and then some, an uncle will look for his 40th public land buck this fall and no he is selective, usually seeing between 5-20 bucks hunting all nine days unless he connects, he sits all day each day, those kinds of spots are few and far between, takes him like 3 minutes to walk to, 1 lucky fella. He's doing better on public then we 20 of us do on private really the weasel.

I don't think it is illegal on state land. A permanent stand in the woods, or along a field is one of the greatest sights I have ever seen.

I can't reserve the area I hunt in, I hunt public land.

No one should be able to lay claim to any public land. If you want a spot get our there early. Those permanent stands built on public land are fair game to anyone who gets there first. IMO, that's the way it should be.

From the regs:

Any permanent unoccupied stand or blind on public land is public and not the property of the person who constructed the stand.

I don't think it is illegal on state land.

Currently, permanent stands without walls and a roof are not illegal on most State forest lands and many State tax forfeited lands however portable stands are recommended. The problem is in the last decade or so public land deer stands have been getting larger with walls, roofs, stair cases, windows, decks, kitchen tables, heaters with 100lbs propane cylinders attached to them overlooking shooting lanes 50-70 feet wide and 1/4 to 1/2 mile long you can see from aerial photos. It is these over-the-top stands which are causing the increased regulation and probably a future ban of all permanent stands on all public lands.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There is something nostalgic about an old time deerstand. Kouba paintings are still sold with these as the subject.

Last year, my son, a fifth generation of our family started hunting and shot his first deer on the same public land his great-great grandpa started hunting decades ago. We plan on hunting this same land for generations to come.

A good friend of ours was in the woods with his 9 year old son during grouse season. They went to check his deer stand. He climbed the wooden stairs and one of the steps broke loose. He caught his ring on a nail and ended up hanging from his ring finger. He finally got off the nail after substantial damage to his finger. They were about 40 miles from the closest hospital and he couldn't drive. They had to hike out of woods and flag someone down to get a ride to the hospital. I have never climbed another old wood stand or kept my ring on during outings or work.

Sure glad I don't hunt with you!!!! Nice friend. You would be 86'd in about 1.2 sec. from my group. I agree that perms are not the way to go on public land but in some areas they are doing no harm either. I have 2 perms on public land and about 10 potable stands in our party. both perms are old ones we fixed up.

I think that the moral of the original story, and this topic all together is: follow the law and everything will be gravy! It will keep you from getting a ticket, as well as avoiding putting others in tough situations. Do I get my gold stars for the day?! grin

How do you know they are illegal? The last law I saw on deer stands was, pertaining to their height. The height is 16 feet now but I think they are removing the height limit.

They were illegal b/c they were built higher than 16ft. But, the CO's did say that they have received calls about people sitting in other people's stands during the previous deer season. So they decided to check every stand in the area, and take out all of the "illegal" stands. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future with this. I too enjoy hunting out of a permanent stands more than the portables. Unfortunately, I think it will become a private property only type of deal.

I'm not one of those guys who hates people that build stands on, and hunt public land. I learned how to deer hunt on public land in a permanent stand! I love hearing about the stories where Jr shoots a buck out of the same area or tree that G-pa did. Unfortunately the public land I grew up on isn't public land anymore. With more and more hunters trying to find their own spot on public land, there is also an increase in people that think they own an area, and lay claim to it by building enclosed stands with padlocks on them. Reserving public land in the name of family tradition is what I was more or less referring to as being over.

Lake update:  It rained quite a bit on overnight Friday into Saturday. There is virtually no snow on the lake now, except a scant amount in the shadows along the shorelines. On Saturday there were good pools of water on top of the ice. My daughter, niece, and nephew had a blast riding snowmobiles around in all of that water/slush. However, most of that liquid water firmed up yesterday and now the lake is pure ice again.   If you've got scratchers and studs on your sled, you will be fine. If not, you better walk or ride an ATV/UTV out to your ice fishing holes.    Ask Mother Nature to send a bunch of snow ASAP.

Agreed.  If Darnold could unload a lot faster off the snap he would be unstoppable.  I could see how frustrated Jefferson was.

I think they could get the Lions.  Not as confident with the Chefs.  I’d love to see it though.   Darnold did well for sure!  But he was off a bit and the receivers made some great catches.  Then a few plays that were close to turnovers.  It was a good thing GB took too long to find their game.   Im not hatin’, just sayin’.

Just like the Twins in 87 and 91.  One game at a time.  I think with KOC they have a good shot. Besides it's a rebuild year according to the experts at the beginning of the year.

It was a win but can they get by the Lion's and Chief's if the defense doesn't show up?  What more can your QB do but his best stat game of the season?

      i dont see a TV......weres da commercial??????🤣🙃

Glad they hung on to it with leaving 13 points on the field.

OMG Vikes. I don't need this heart stopping kind if game,  but love 14-2.  Now regroup and take care of Detroit.
