What do you do with yourTransducer when driving?

Recommended Posts

All the care I take of my winter transducer has me thinking, I never pay much attention to my boats' transducers when I am trailered and driving around. I suppose stones could maybe hit them and ding them up a bit.

Just wondering if any of you guys take precautions like covering them up with anything, or unscrewing them enough to tilt the vertically all the way up etc... or if I'm just being overcautious...

I don't do anything with my ducer and never had any problems (that I know of) with rocks hitting it. I guess all it takes is one rock to change that though. You can never be too cautious when it comes to expensive fishing gear IMHO. If you wanted to cover it with something, I would think a reel cover would work pretty nicely if you can get a snug fit

Never had a problem yet but to tell you the truth I have never given it much thought. I guess I would be more worried about rocks hitting my motor then the transducer.

Great. Now everybody is going out to bubble wrap their transducer then covering that with a Crown Royal bag before every trip. I would wager the mortgage that NO ONE on this board has EVER covered their transducer when they were driving somewhere.

AND YOU KNOW DARN WELL THAT THEY WON'T TAKE THAT STUFF OFF UNTIL THEY ARE BACKED ONTO THE LANDING.

Haha...yea, i guess I am. Watch though, all it would take is one of the well known fishing companies to create a special sock for the transducer and I'm sure that they could create the market for it smile

For a rock to make it all the way back to the transducer would be pretty tough. That is a pretty low angle and you have cross members and axles in the way to to block the rocks.

I wouldn't worry about it.

You know, as electronics get more and more advanced, they generally become more fragile and "temperamental". For an extremely high tech FF to work optimally, the transducer would have to be more advanced and less tolerant to "normal wear and tear". I see the day where dust or a good accidental bump may be enough to throw things just far enough out of whack. Far-I, get going on that transducer protector. Everybody, please remember to remove your "Far-I Transducer Protector" in the parking lot, not on the ramp.

I wash mine with soap and water, dry it off, buff it with a nice soft piece of fleece and then wrap it up in a plastic soap box lined with bubble wrap with a notch cut out for the cord and rubber band it shut tightly.

NOT! grin

Never even though about that ducer! I could see a rock bouncing off the road and hitting it, but unlikely...however someone has to win the lottery sometime grin

On my LX3s I put the ducer in bubble wrap before closing up the cover. The LX5 has a foam pad in the storage hole so no special protection is needed. On my boat, for about 4 years, I have been putting a low cut sport sock on it, secured with a rubber band when making long trips. If I am just going a few miles to a local lake I'll leave it commando. Very small effort to potentially save a fishing trip.

OK guys, let me have it. grin

I like to leave mine down and fired up so I know if there are any fish in the holes I might go over. grin

The times were I knocked my ducer I was in the boat hitting submerged stumps on the pool 4 back waters. I'm not at all worried about it while trailering.

Like EBass said, your more than likely going to damage it while boating and fishing than on the trailer. If you are THAT worried about it, get a shoot through hull transducer and epoxy it in. Problem solved.

Guys I know would cover it with plastic rap, then pour hot wax over it to seal it compleatly. Did a good job when on gravol roads up north and the wax came write off at the lake.

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone who damaged their transducer while trailering their boat. I've never worried about mine. I did break one off when I hit a piece of wood in the water, and I've occaisonally had them kick-up from hitting something --- but that's what they're designed to do.

I am amazed that the one on my trolling motor even gets a reading as scratched and gouged as it is.
