Hi Sawdude-

For walleyes you keep under 17" and one trophy over 28". The limit is 4 walleye and 4 sauger. Pike the limit is 3, only one can be over 40".

Crappies you can have 10 and there is no slot. Bonus fish are perch,

tullibee, whitefish, and burbot. The walleye/sauger season closes in mid

April. Everything else is continueous. Rainy is a wonderful lake and you will have a great time in March.

Sincerely,

Woody

I thought it was you can have a mixed bag of Walleye and Sauger with no more then 4 of them being walleye, so technically you could keep 8 sauger, or 6 sauger and 2 eyes, or 4 and 4, but never more then 4 of them can be eyes.

Hi FISHING,

You have it correct, Woody had it right also on walleyes, he maybe just forgot to say you can have a mixed bag, not more then 4 being walleyes.

Fishmeister

Hi Fish-hound,

There is no slot on sauger, however you will rarely catch a sauger over 14". Chris told me of a spot that he had caught a few over 20", I would have never believed it as the biggest I had ever caught in Rainy was about 17". So I went

& tried it a few years ago when you could first could get on the ice...sure enough I got one 21", when they get big like that, their markings are very dark & really cool looking. Since then I heard of one caught in the fall in gold portage that was 26", however I did not witness the fish. So there are some true monster saugers in Rainy, but the chances of catching one is rare.

Sincerely,

Fishmeister

Hi Shek,

Actually it is pretty easy to catch walleyes under 17", there are some places where your going to catch almost all slots, especially east of the brule, but even up there I know of places where you can catch nice limits of eaters., and west of brule you have a much smaller run of fish. What is really neat is most walleyes I've caught over 10 lbs.(30") have came from west of the brule.

Sincerely,

Fishmeister

Wow. We always fish east of the windmill and over to the american channel. The spots we know they're 20+. Not complaining. Thanks for the info.

lol yep, it's hard to get small walleye and it's hard to get big sauger, atleast where I fish out in the east. My first year on Rainy I caught a pink sauger, it was pretty wicked looking.

We'll go deep. Thanks. Hey by the way, what's the biggest smallie you've ever caught? I saw a 5-10 on your post. Nice fish and great pics. Thanks again.

My biggest smallie on Rainy is 5-15 caught in November. Guys that tell you they catch lots of 5's are, how shall I put it, embellishing the truth. Check the results of the tournies and you will see that an honest 5 pounder is rare on Rainy. But happily there are plenty of 3s and 4s.
