Casey, the battery does drain faster with a more powerful unit. It IS nice with the Vex to get two full days and sometimes longer off one battery, but since those batteries are so cheap, I just generally run around with a spare in the kit anyway, in case of failure.

You can easily get a long day's use, and sometimes more, from a battery with an LX5. I've only used them a few times multi-days like that, so folks who run the 5s all the time can probably be more specific about battery life between chargings.

Not to get you guys off the subject, but I have a buddy who would like to fish lakers through the ice...any suggestions on lakes nearby Duluth (other than Superior) to go???

Not exactly nearby, but there is a mine pit by Giants Ridge that has lake trout along with rainbows and brookies in it.

I see not to be outdone, Vex even has a TRI-beam (8/12/20) transducer now...

I looked at that for quite a bit when I bought, but in the end decided the 12 degree would be a good middle ground. And if I'm not happy, then the tri-ducer can be found for $79 if needed. i'll wait to see how the 12 does first.

iv been running a 12 on my fl-18 for the last 3 winters. works great for both eyes and lakers.

That's good to hear Mike, I was hoping to get that from the 12. The FL also has the low power/shallow water mode which I'll have to check out on Red on of these days.
