Where to go

Recommended Posts

I am starting to plan a trip for next summer, I am looking for a general (Bass, Walleye, Pike...) trip. I have my own boat so that is not an issue.

Where in MN should I look. I am not looking for specific places but general areas. Ones I am already considering are Mille Lacs and Vermillion, but I am open to any suggestions.

I plan on going to the sports show at the River Centre next weekend to check out some ideas.

Cass is good for all three.

Mille Lacs during or just after the Crawdad molt for Largemouth and Smallmouth. Plenty of feisty pike too, Walleyes in the evening.

Vermillion is great for all three, lots of water to fish.

I will send you an email with resorts that I have stayed at on Cass and Vermillion.

I go quite a bit to Woody,s resort on Rainy Lake. Rainy Lake is a world class fishery and Voyagers national park is right there to enjoy the scenery also and wildlife.

Great eye fishing and some huge pike. Big crappie depending on the time of year and the smallmouth fishing can also be awesome.

Your best bet would be to talk with Woody to see what time of year would be the best for the specie you would most like to target.

Woody may also be at the show. A call to Woody and he can explain the Rainy Lake area to you and camping options also. Woody goes out of his way to see that people have nothing short of an awesome vacation.

Are you planning on staying at a resort and fishing 1 lake, or do you want the option of several different lakes? Vermilion would be a great choice, as would the ely area. I would also recommend grand marais.

I go to grand marais every june, so I'm a little biased. Great wilderness oppurtunities with excellent bass, walleye, and trout fishing. You also have the choice of fishing superior...nothing wrong with the chance of a 20+ pound laker wink

Vermillion is good as is the Leech/Cass area. Ottertail county has a ton of lakes as well. I think I would try to figure out what KIND of lake you want to fish first. Do you want canadian shield lakes or weedy firtile lakes. How busy do you want the lake to be and how secluded do you want to be?

Several good areas have been mentioned. I would put Rainy, Vermillion and Leech high on my list.

What I've enjoyed about Vermillion is the variety of options for different species. I used to go there with my dad and pick a species or two to target each day. You can use different techniques daily and feel like it is a different fishing trip each time the sun rises.

I've had great times getting crappies on tube jigs, walleyes on rattle baits, smallmouths on fat raps, largemouths on topwaters, trolling cranks for weedline pike, perch and bluegills on worms, but I haven't fished the muskies yet.

Maybe I'm the one who needs a trip to Vermillion.

Glad to see the Cass Lake mentioned in early replies to this post...we been going for 35 years now...next yr...ooops, it is next yr! I mean this June, we are hitting it again. So far, only Crappies are the elusive species for us. And if you can stomach Rockies instead---gold mine!

Surprised now one said the Brainerd Lakes area. All of the above plus golf. Although it is also alot more busy.
