Is Pelican a tough lake for panfishing? Would a smaller lake be a better choice if I have not spent a lot of time on the Pelican?

kingfish, all of those areas can be good but weeds always help. Nice wallys on Pelican really like weeds in a addition to classic walleye stuff. When the weather is good, nice fish are usually 12 to 20 fow and aggressive. Deeper usually only produces lots of small fish. However I usually only fish 3-6 and never stay out for the later bite, things can be much different and I dont bother with that. Jiggin spoons work good (perch patterns for me), the best minnow for me is real big rainbows. I fish the main lake and have had luck out in the middle of halverson for crappies and jones bay for crappies and sunnies. But if pannies are your goal North Long, Cullen lakes, Misson lakes or Upper Hay are more consistent and offer better numbers and size.

Pelican is a good wally lake. I generally use a white glow medium pimple with a minnie head, seems to work best. Had some luck with a brass pimple too. Depth varies. Shallower at beginning of ice season and they generally seem to move deeper later on. Got some bigger wallys in 30 FOW (24-27") although most are 16-20". Some small ones. Theres some nice tulibees out in deep if your interested. They like small crappie jigs with minnow head. Great fighters on crappie gear. Crappies are hard to find in winter, usually stumble on a few by mistake. Find weeds find crappie. If you want crappie try a proven crappie lake, although pelican is a great spring open water panny lake.

Hey Everyone!

Heading up to the area for the Tournement on Gull this year and we are staying at Breezy? I have only been on Pelican a couple times both times with no luck! Does anyone have any pointers? Last year we tried a few spots out there off the points the sharp drop offs and a couple humps we found. also tried for some sunnies by the weeds with no luck? Im not looking for any coordinates or hot spots just a tip if you can help i would appreciate it.

I'd start by using minnows rather than the hotdogs and corn you've been using the last couple times...just a thought!

Try north of rifle sight in 20 to 30 fow. Last night caught 20 or 30 eyes but only kept a 15 and 16 incher. Look at above posts for what works. It will be while before you fish so spots will change, but what works rarely does. If you have the lakemaster chip you should find thousands of spots to try in that depth range, check the day before you plan to go for more current active depths.

I've been fishing Pelican off and on over the last few years and have always had pretty good luck in 24-28 FOW with a dead stick, red hook and small shiner While jigging a spoon tipped w/ a head. Most areas I have fished have been on steep breaks and there are pleanty to choose from. Best times for me have been from 5-8pm with some decent action around 10pm

Good Luck

You've had decent action around 10 p.m.? Wow that's suprising, I've fished Pelican pretty regularly for the past 6 years now and the bite for me at least is always around 4-6 and after that it pretty much shuts down. Maybe it's the location but I've never had good success late night on Pelican.

Oh without a doubt there is a good am bite. I've found the best time to be succesful is right at sunrise to about 8/9 am and sunset to 7 pm. Has anyone noticed if a certain bait is doing better than the other? I usually get shiners and rainbows but the shiners just don't last long enough for the $$ you spend.

Good bite from 11:30am-1:30pm today. Found them at the bottom of a couple different breaks in 35-39 fow. 1/4oz Northland perch buckshot with a minnowhead. Guess it must have been lunch time smile

Stop filling your minnow bucket with booz and they will live longer!! I think its because you are not using hot dogs and Corn!! maybe you should try a new spot on the lake I here the spot you are in crazy people surround it in the mornings??

thanks for the info guys! Much Appreciated. How is the travel out there? Are trucks with 4 wheel getting around pretty easy? Or should I be coming out on a sled?
