No Luck

Saw on ESPN Andrew Luck is going to skip the draft this year. I thought Stanford students were supposed to be smart... Leaving $40 million on the table guarenteed doesn't sound very smart for an architectural design degree (starting salary in an archictecture firm ($30,000/yr). Plus your coach is leaving and this is the last year theres a chance there won't be a rookie pay scale. I don't get this move. What does everyone else think?

Good for him. I understand your point about leaving money on the table, but I think it shows a lot of character and leadership for him to realize there's more to life than the NFL.

Yeah, how stupid can someone be to stay and get a college degree from one of the most premiere universities in the country! I highly doubt the NFL is going anywhere...there will be plenty of money to be made after he graduates.

well said be nice if a few more kids did the same thing, then maybe he could get a job after the NFL instead of filing for bankruptcy after having 9 kids from 9 different women

I could be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that the CBA was up in March and the draft was in April, so it didn't really matter. He would have had to come out last year.

I am all for him getting his degree.

Nobody graduates with a degree from Stanford and earns 30K a year. At the very least, he'd take a "consultant" job and be in a very, very desirable tax bracket right out of college.

From what I understand, the rookie wage scale WILL be in effect for this draft class even though the draft occurs before the CBA expires. The teams can draft the players under the old agreement but they wouldn't be signed until the "new" one is in place.

This will surely change how the draft will play out now....

I think it is a dumb move for him to stay in school. He is smart enough that he will not waste his money and have to file for bankruptcy after football. With him running as much as he does, he is one wrong hit away from his football career ending forever while still at The Cardinal.

BTW, when working at Kansas City Airport for Avis the Vikes came to town to play the Chiefs. Leo Lewis rented a car from me and handed me an Avis credit card with his company being the Vikings. I told him I was from MN, and loved watching him play (he is my size, not many 5 foot nothings in the NFL) and I asked him what he did for the Vikes. He explained he is the teams "education liason" and also explained that his job, is to help guys that leave college early get their degrees.

Unfortunately this is just not true for everyone out of a good school, not in this economy. You wouldn't believe how hard it is out there for many graduates who have squandered 200 grand on an education to find a meager job that would pay a $30k salary.

Stanford boosters would be lining up to be able to hire this guy...for any job. Mid six-figures to seven figures is where Mr. Luck would start his career...easy.

I know it's not true for everyone who dishes out alot to attend an ELITE school but this is a football forum and we're talking about Andrew Luck.

40 million can and will buy you a lot of degrees for post NFl years. Seems like A. Page is doing pretty well.

I'll bet the thought of playing for the panthers made his choice to stay in school a little easier. It is a tough choice though, What if he gets hurt.

Luck will take out an insurance policy to protect him from injury for his senior season. He will be in good shape.

With a hurting construction industry (especially Californias hurting economy) there are few cushy consulting jobs for college grads with no experience due to 24/7 football duties. Boosters are there while you play well, not after you graduate... He can always work towards his degree while in the NFL. Lots of players do it.

Prospect insurance policies are tough to collect on with todays medical advances.

Good luck to Luck... he has the tools to go as far as he wants in life.

No problem with him staying. My opinion, most qb's(or any other position)who stay for senior season start in nfl much quicker and are more successful. Luck wants to go for a national championship. There must be many players returning to make that run so he wants in. This will only raise his stock.

Since there will more than likely not be a new CBA at the time off the draft. Teams will not sign draft picks. When and if a new deal is reached there will more than likely be a rookie wage scale in place. The days of huge quaranteed money are all ready gone.

The history of QB's earning degrees before entering the NFL speaks for it self. Farve, Manning, Elway, Marino, Montana, Brady, Brees, and Young to name a few.

Since 1990 only three starting QB's to win the Super Bowl that did not have a college degree. Big Ben, twice, T. Dilfer, and M. Rypien.

Harbaugh will ended up staying at Stanford on more year. Then will take the job with the team with the first pick and draft his QB.

This kid made the right choice.

Take into consideration he probably wants to ENJOY playing football for 1 more year! Once you start getting payed for something, it becomes a job! And it just becomes less fun to do
