Heater for small portable

uffdapete

Question

Looking for heater recommendations for a one man Clam. There isn't much room in front of the seat on the ice with 2 holes and a flasher in place so would like something safe/stable, small and efficient to put in the sled behind and to the side of the seat.

I have an 8,000-14,000 btu heater for that works nicely in an Eskimo Quickfish 3 but it's both too big and puts out too much heat for the Clam.

The smaller Coleman "Black Cat Heater" (3,000 BTU) is a fair answer to the 1 man shack application. Slower pick up on the heat at the start yet they are dependable for smaller portable use applications.

No pilot lights to worry about, clean burning heat. They also serve one well in a hunting blind, quite heat, light to pack in.

The Coleman SportCatis a 3,000 to 5,000 BTU Catalytic Heater, another good option, in a slightly larger configuration.

NOTE: You can add a 90 deg elbow, and put them on a 5lb tank. This adds a lot of convenience and longevity of use.

The little buddy is the best! I wouldn't trade it for any other heater in the world! Easily starts runs on little propane tank for quiet a while and it warms up a shack quick!

I have the Little Buddy that mounts on a 1# tank and its good in a 1 man when its above freezing. Below that and you need a bit more BTU's. I think its 3700 BTUs not sure?

Typically I just use my lantern in my one man. It has provided plenty of heat in a small rig even on the coldest days. That way when it gets dark you don't have to find more room. Plus in the model that I have it fits perfectly in the canvas pouch/cradle under the seat which keeps it safe when traveling. One down side is the mantles seem to break easy.

I'd use the Buddy Heater. Should be enough BTUs to heat your space and because you don't have a lot of room less chance of burning something.

Thanks for the replies and ideas. I have friends who have the recommended heaters. Will borrow one for a day and test it out. Ed C - You know Topper? I work with him!

one of the best accessories that I bought was for my lantern and that is a hard plastic case for it......the mantles stay on the lantern way longer (currently going on same one since august) and for 20 bucks or so it has paid for itself 10 times over in the last 5 years........

the buddy heater that runs the 4000-9000 btu's is what I use in my clam pro and it is a great heater for that small of a house!!! I usually have 2 10" holes a vexilar and the buddy heater and still have room to stretch my feet

I would say the Little Buddy or the Regular Buddy heater is going to be your best bet for a quality one. Those Colman ones shown above are garbage I just threw one out they produce no heat when you are out on a middle of a lake.

Little Buddy Heater: 4000 btu for $65.

Buddy Heater: 4000/9000 btu for $70.

Big Buddy Heater: 4000/9000/18000 btu for $130.

The math should point you in the right direction. Get the Buddy.

My sportcat would be perfect for a 1 man shelter. It works great in my 1 man blind. I use the Mr. Heater cooker/heater in my 4 person Ice Cube. The sportcat just didn't have enough for a big hub.

I've got the heater/cooker for the Quikfish 3 and it's about perfect for that in terms of keeping it warm in any weather and enough room to be safe to use. Most of the time the low setting is warm enough to keep the holes open. EG - Wed we were on LOW with a high in the single digits below 0 & a 10-15 mph wind and the low setting was enough until the last hour.

For a Clam Scout Pro that heater would be both too warm, and too dangerous cause there isn't enough space in there to keep it away from fabric, lines or me.

Yeah, I agree with pretty much everyone on here- Little Buddy. I have both a Big and a Little, rarely take the Big out.

In a few weeks is right around when Lowes blows the Buddys out at 50% off, paid $37.50 for my tough Little Buddy there
