Best bait shop?

I don't know about the best, but we stopped at Dr. Tackle in Kelliher last week and he had everything we needed, and at a great price. The large shinners worked best for us.

masterpuppet,

I'm going to be heading up next Thursday too, I'm going through Hillmans and was planning to get my bait through them. It might cost a little extra but I try to support the businesses in the towns that I go to. Who are ou going threw, are you bringing your own house?

Beacon has fatheads and shiners in there bait shop, dont think hillmans has shiners.

I was just up last week and got shinners from Hillmans. I actually think their bait is pretty cheap. We got over 3 dozen shinners for 10 dollars. I am not saying they will do it every time, but the guy was pretty generous with us and didnt sit and count each one like they do around here.

As far as getting everything you need??

I dont know what you need. Hillmans has bait, road passes, some tackle to pick from, some assorted food, and the award-winning Tall Tales set up bar. I wouldnt think of going anywhere else. Been going there for six years now.

Yep, Shorty has always been my favorite, and I dont think he is doing so well. Reminds me of my grandpa every time I see him. He would always tell me whatever I wanted to know when I called on the phone. Not like other place where they just try to get you off the phone or lie to you about road conditions so they can sell a couple more road passes.

materpuppet,

It's been 6 yrs. myslf since I've been up there. From reading the info on here the key jigs seem to be anything that rattles and glows red. Plain red hooks also seem to produce well. The other key plan is to be mobil during the day, but the way it sounds you want to have a strong back, or a snowmobile to get around out in the middle of the lake where u can pretty well be by yourselves. Good thing I've got a strong back cuz I don't have a snowmobile cry

If you are coming through Bemidji, Blue Water Bait is an option, we usally stop at a place out side of Bemidji a few miles its on the East side of the road by a little Gas Station - white building. I can't think of the name, might not even have one. Great guy, great bait, ask for the Red Lake or Rainy River Mix- you won't be disappointed.

If hes not there typically he will leave air bags of minnows in a cooler for you to grab and just leave the cash there (honors system-dont see that much anymore)

Always knows whats going on, tell him Mike from Fargo sent ya!
